1.0 out of 5 stars Love it - or hate it., 20 Jun 2007
If you think the panacea of a desolate, undernourished, deprived (and most of all - deserving) youngster somewhere in the world is a visit to the US of A, this is the book for you. Each chapter is suddenly interrupted with a reminder of this premise - and boy oh boy what a treat this will be for the winner. I bought the book, despite reservations about the authors intent, but went unrewarded with the very amateurish and superficial style. I really, really had to abandon at the half way stage. If you want a travel guide - try The Rough Guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic Journey, 21 Mar 2004

What a wonderful, heart-warming story. Newsham is one of those authors whom you laugh with, cry with, feel lonely and homesick with and just enjoy being along for the ride with.

Brad Newsham sets off to Asia and Africa in search of someone to invte back to the USA with him for one month. The characters he meets along the way are fascinating and offer us a real window into their daily lives. I just loved the earcleaner from India and Tony from the Philippines. After his trip he choses one of the people he's met along the way (I won't spoil it), and it's a happy ending.

If you enjoy this, pick up All the Right Places by the same author. Just as good a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable - even during my own travels, 27 Aug 2002
Wanting a holiday with a difference this year I travelled to America to join a trekking company which took me from Denver to LA in 11 days. I took with me in my trusty rucksack 2 books and my diary. The one book was forgotten, the diary written in haste - all so I could get back to reading Brad's account of his travels across the world. It was fascinating to read about places I had only dreamt about and through his incisive insights he managed to bring each place alive in my imagination. Not only that but you got a real feeling for the people and how they live in the 'real' world. Brad's book is not only for those interested in travel but for those interested in life - and a happy ending!
