Amazon.co.uk Review

It is Christmas Eve in Ste-Anne-de-Beaulieu. Madaleine Blais is a beautiful actress whose spirit of freedom has been crushed by the recent massacre of feminists in the local University. Pierre Rousseau, a handsome lawyer and Madeleine's ex-husband, is impatient for her to arrive in the neighbourhood so that he can tell her how much he still loves her. But Madeleine is hanging from a noose in her grandmother's barn and Pierre's confession is too late. Driven by despair and a conviction that this is not suicide, Pierre begins his own investigation into a case which leads him to memories he would rather forget, and a rigorous self-examination that persuades him that he is not, perhaps, the innocent ex-husband.

The snow-muted Canadian landscape provides an eerie backdrop to this psychological murder mystery. Pierre Rousseau, who narrates the story, is a complex creature and Appignanesi manages him with skill. As with the best fiction, the writing resonates with different layers of meaning as the murder investigation becomes an externalised version of Pierre's emotional journey, while the narrative loops through its stages of discovery, keeping the reader in the dark right up until the final chapter. This is an intelligent crime novel which will particularly appeal to fans of Donna Tartt's The Secret History. --Hannah Griffiths --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and thrilling account of guilt, love and revenge, 24 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This book I found unputdownable! The detail of life in the Canadian sub-zero winter reflected the feelings of the characters. The heroine, a highly successful actress, is totally convincing, and as the plot evolves, the confusion of who she loved, and who was involved in her death, is intricately built up. No need to reveal the outcome: whatever you guess is sure to be wrong - or only half-right. A truly breathtaking psychological drama.

3.0 out of 5 stars Trial by flashback, 21 Aug 2008
By Brian Butler "Brian the Bookman" (Bournemouth, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Novels which major on a 'flashback' technique are notoriously difficult to bring off. Appignanesi is a major novelist, whose work rates very highly above most modern writers, and there is no doubting her skill in producing real, believeable characters. However, in this novel, I felt that the central character of Madeleine Blais never proved real enough. (Of course, she dies before the novel opens, and this might be the reason why this is so.) She casts her shadow over the whole action, and indeed, she is meant to hold centre stage.
I was never convinced by the final denouement --the murderer was never filled out fully enough for us to be really convinced of his guilt--a bit of a straw man. Nor was I wholly convinced by the 'hero' Pierre Rousseau. He seemed to me to pass through too many transfigurations.
I came to this novel with very high expectations, having enjoyed 'The Memory man' thoroughly. I was not wholly disappointed, but I cannot rate it as a total success.

4.0 out of 5 stars obsessive and passionate love in return for unfaithfulness, 30 Oct 2007
By Esra Demir "e.d." (Istanbul, Turkey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dead of Winter (Paperback)
In the beginning such a tedious writing, especially on the basis of having a big amount of literature. As a result of it, the words in it are sort of hard to comprehend and catch unless you focus on the reading. However, suddenly, in the middle of the novel, it becomes more intriguing and fascinating. It should be read ,particularly it's because the book has some intelligent and considered details about how to introduce the characters to us even if in the beginning, as mentioned about them a little, we haven't known about them in detail, that is to say, as incidents occur, we are as readers informed about some facts that we hadn't been enlightened before..
By the way, the book has a lot of pages, you'd better be patient.
