Amazon.co.uk Review

This book features 366 essays penned from a woman's perspective. Sample topics include gratitude, harmony, self-nurturing, positive body image, the importance of scented linen closets, and many others. Each essay sports a pithy quote from (surprise!) the likes of Kahlil Gibran. Viewed uncritically, it's hard to argue with Simple Abundance's earnest admonitions to appreciate life, in all its messy imperfect excellence. And the fact that serenity and happiness are each in dreadfully short supply can excuse some of the treacly writing. But Breathnach sometimes lapses into what can only be described as her "Martha Stewart on Prozac" voice, and the results are aggravating to the extreme: "if you've been hesitant to strike up a reciprocal relationship with your guardian angel, don't be". (What on earth can you do for your guardian angel?) Being acid is so unattractive ... and shooting fish in a barrel besides. Read these feel-good essays every morning with the rising sun, a cup of mint tea, and a bluebird chirping on your windowsill, and you'll be happy

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book which lifts your spirits., 20 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Simple Abundance is a beautiful book, which can be dipped into at any time of the year. I received it as a birthday gift, and have since gone on to buy it for others. It puts the basics of life into focus, and makes you realise that life is as hard as you make it. There are many thoughts and ideas which guide you through the difficult times. It also makes you look at what is truly important in your life, and helps to dispense with the unimportant stuff. Simple Abundance opens your eyes to the simple beauty of life, which is to be found in family, friends and nature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly does give Comfort and Joy ..., 3 Aug 2004
I have read Sarah Ban Breathnach's book thoroughly and return to it regularly. It is written as a "daybook" and offers gentle spiritual lessons and meditations. It is very subtle and gives suggestions and ideas without pushing them on the reader, and subsequently taking the reader through new and positive thought processes with each page, each page being just a fairly short and simple meditation for the day. When I first read the book I took great comfort in the fact that there were thousands like me quietly existing, and that one of us went on to spin this beautiful golden web of love and concern to an unknown audience. I actually passed my first copy of the book to someone dear to me who I felt at the time needed some words of comfort, and as the months went by I realised how much I missed the book, which I liked to pick up and read at random from time to time ... I looked in the bookshops for another copy to buy but could not find one anywhere ... so I gave up looking and resolved to live without it - the very next day I found a copy in the local charity shop - it was in pristine condition and unfortunately had been left unread. Fortunate for me, though, and I will always keep a copy with me. I am just going online now because another person I care for is showing signs of needing some spiritual comfort and, as she lives in another country, I cannot physically be there for her. I think the next best thing is to buy another copy of this book and send it to her. Thank you Sarah Ban Breathnach and I hope you read this review one day so that you can know that your book really did bring comfort and joy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring if a little too 'American' in places., 6 Jan 2001
By A Customer
A very helpful book for those seeking a greater insight into themselves and the world. However, in places this book concentrates on the 'ideal American way of life' so can be a bit off-putting. Rather than sticking rigidly to the day to day structure of the book, I would suggest skipping the bits of homemade apple pie and lemonade on the porch and just extract what you find useful.
