4.0 out of 5 stars Great story of entrepreneurship, 9 Aug 2006
By M. Burch (Cornwall, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was expecting to read about globalisation, food miles, junk food and how McDonald's have promoted factory farming. What I got was the story of McDonald's growth from one restaurant to a world-wide chain and when I saw what a big volume it is I wasn't sure if it would sustain my interest. Actually it was fascinating because John Love conveys the passion of its founders for their business and for constantly seeking ways of better satisfying their customers and making the business more efficient. This is a great capitalist story, like Sam Walton's account of how he built Walmart. The author, at the start, proclaims his independence, but he doesn't hide his admiration. The book has lots of stories of the enterprising people who built McDonald's and what drove them, and about how the delicate balance between McDonald's and its franchisees was maintained to mutual benefit. Although it doesn't cover recent developments I'd recommend this book as a lively account of the creation of an amazingly successful business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb insight into the history of this giant fast food Co, 21 Jun 2000
Although mainly based on US operations, this book is a must for any person seriously interested in becoming a franchisee in McDonald's. It is written in a very easy to read manner, and gives a balanced view of the growth of this organisation, warts and all. Fascinating to think the man behind the whole thinking of this concept was 52 years old when he embarked on his mission.

The appeal of this book may be less exciting for anyone other than a potential franchisee, but it would still make an interesting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Amazing, 10 Aug 2001
By A Customer
An absolutely fascinating book. I kept fellow Co-Workers gripped with my tales and useless trivia for weeks. This book could have been awful but a good writer and a great success story pull it through.
