Gotta Get This!, 29 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I'll be honest, I have no idea what made me chose to buy the entire collection of all 4 novels and 56 stories in paperback I have No idea. But I did it, and in three months I read them all, cover-to-cover. And then I cried at the end cause there were no more stories. After I finished I listened again to the Rathone/Bruce series. The actors, the stories, they were all great, but there was soemthing I couldn't put my finger on...something....not quite right. After reading the stories, I knew what that something was. Watson was stupid. At least that was the radio's take on it. And Holmes was kinda a Know-It-All who magically had all the answers without saying why. It bugged me. So I went as my brother put it "hunting for the real Holmes and Watson". I found them in Clive Merrison and Michael Williams. This duo make Holmes and Watson more..realistic. Portrayed by Michael Williams, Dr. John H. Watson is what I've been advocating for so long: He is not stupid (you don't become any kind of a doctor by being stupid.)..he's just not Sherlock Holmes. Clive Merrison's Sherlock Holmes is not infalliable, and in fact seems more human than the one's I'd grown up with. The sound effects and scripting allow you to see rather than sit and be told what's going on. I think what I like best about this version is the way it deals with things that remain a mystery in the books. The Canon never actually show us Profesor Moriarty. The Valley of Fear, the Final Problem, he makes...I'd say guest appearances. Watson still of course never sees him, but the audience does....
