5.0 out of 5 stars A straight shooting biography of several amazing lives., 10 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Yeager personafied the WWII generation, the finest ever produced by America. His humble description of his amazing life is inspiring to all and incredible to those with a love of aviation. Besides his own history, he chronicles the life of several other people, such as lady pilots Pancho Barnes and Jackie Cochran, who also lived lives that read like movie scripts. A book that has to be read several times to be fully appreciated. Also check out "The First and the Last", by Adolf Galland, for an equally unusual true account by a great aviator and leader. Farron Dacus, Irving, Texas.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have little to add to all the praise..., 16 Jun 2005
... except that Iam an aviation enthusiast and a rather picky reader. And I just could not put this book down - I even read it at work, hidden behing a pile of correspondence :)

Well written, entertaining, honest, and informative - I happen to be an engineer, but I thing even the lay(wo)man, the few technical descriptions are not too boring.

Best read since "Skunkworks" by Ben R. Rich and Leo Janos.

RECOMMENDED!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellence, 27 Oct 2003
By SammiCat "Sammi" (South Bucks, UK) - See all my reviews
As the wife of an aviation enthusiast, I have read quite a few aviation novels over the years.

Out of curiosity I picked this book up: I was hooked from the opening line, gripped and hugely entertained by the various stories and I seriously did not want the narrative to finish! What a wonderful story from beginning to end - even more so given that it was real life. A top book by a top man - what a privilege to have "shared" in the wonder years.

With the retirement of Concorde last week, it was all the more poignant for me to have finished this book about the start of the supersonic age on the same day as Concorde's last commercial flight!

Definitely for flyers and non-flyers alike.
