About the Author

Mario Puzo was born in New York. He is the author of the bestselling novel The Godfather and many other acclaimed novels. Puzo also wrote many screenplays, including those for the three Godfather movies, for which he won two academy awards. He died at his home in Long Island, New York, at the age of seventy-eight. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Having previously read and been captivated by the Godfather, I worked my way back over Puzo's work, and have come to his first, The Dark Arena.

If you are expecting a gangster book, you will be surprised. This is an intelligent and poignant book set in post-war Germany. It addresses a side to the aftermath of WWII that is not often covered, and it does so with a hard and unsentimental approach.

The characters are grittily realistic, flawed anti-heroes who Puzo has not gone out of his way to make likeable. It is a powerful novel and in the same way that the Godfather carries within it lessons about the male path through life, so does the Dark Arena.
