2.0 out of 5 stars An effort to read but with some good ideas at the end., 11 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This book finishes off a quartet set during the far future in which the last remnants of humanity have fled to the centre of the galaxy in order to survive a relentless slaughter by mechanoid life forms. The book continues where the third left off ie following Toby as he searches for his family in the esty, an artificial structure within the event horizon of the black hole at the centre of the galaxy.

The first two thirds of the book are tedious to read since Benfords descriptions are often hard to visualise and the location in which the story takes place is, ie a black hole, means that there are unique and therefore hard to understand concepts. The story does pick up nearer the end with the best and most revealing parts being right at the finish. But it seems that the author keeps the reader unnecessarily in the dark for most of the book without making it interesting enough to compensate.

I haven't read the first 2 books in this series, perhaps reading these enhances the fourth. I would recommend buying it only for those who have collected the other 3.

3.0 out of 5 stars Family Bishop continues running. Are the mechs stoppable?, 11 Sep 1999
By A Customer
Having read the first three books in the series and enjoyed them, I just had to get this one to find out how Mr Benford brings all threads to a conclusion. Family Bishop runs to Galactic centre and the last haven from the Mechs. But the Mechs have other ideas. The story is well written and hard to put down. A welcome return is made by the Mantis, one of sci-fi's better robots, to add a bit of extra chill to the plot. I have to say that this story has an amount of sureal wierdness if the shape of zombies and "rivers of liquid metal". All in all this is a fine read and he certainly does conclude the adventures of Kileen, Toby and co. The final three paragraphs left me with a haunting emptiness that I haven't felt before when finishing a book. Buy it, read it and enjoy it.....I did!
