Product Description

Chloe needs a holiday. She's sick of making wedding dresses, her partner Philip has troubles at work, the whole family wants a break. Her wealthy friend Gerard has offered the loan of his luxury villa in Spain - perfect. Hugh is not a happy man. His immaculate wife Amanda seems more interested in her new kitchen than in him, and he works so hard to pay for it, he barely has time for his children. Maybe he'll have a chance to bond with them on holiday. His old friend Gerard has lent them a luxury villa in Spain - perfect. Both families arrive at the villa and realise the awful truth - Gerard has double-booked. What no-one else realises is that Chloe and Hugh have a history; and as tensions rise within the two families, old passions resurface. It seems that Gerard's 'accidental' double booking may not be an accident after all... --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Chloe needs a holiday. She's sick of making wedding dresses and her partner Philip has trouble at work. Her wealthy friend Gerard has offered the loan of his luxury villa in Spain - perfect.

Hugh is not a happy man. His immaculate wife Amanda seems more interested in the granite for the new kitchen than in him, and he works so hard to pay for it all, he barely has time for his family. But his old schoolfriend Gerard has lent them a luxury villa in Spain - perfect.

Both families arrive at the villa and get a shock: Gerard has double-booked. An uneasy week of sharing begins, and tensions soon mount in the soaring heat. 5.0 out of 5 stars Another marvellous book from Madeleine Wickham!, 17 July 2001
SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS by Madeleine Wickham is an education in how to write contemporary women's fiction well. I've loved all her books, but this is one of her best yet. Full of complex, realistic characterisation, and with a fantastic 'voice' and a beautiful turn of phrase. And her plotting is so simply yet so skilfully put together that as a writer myself it makes me sigh with envy. But not in a negative way. It's the sort of book that inspires me to do better and raise my own game, as well as filling me with ideas.

I strongly recommend anyone who loves good fiction to read SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS. And if you read this review, Madeleine... please hurry up with your next book. I can't wait to read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to read, 19 Aug 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sleeping Arrangements (Paperback)
I read this book in under 2 days whilst on holiday in Cyprus. I couldn't put it down and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

I adored the 'Shopaholic books' and 'The Undomestic Goddess' by this author under the name of 'Sophie Kinsella'. This was the first book I have read which comes under the umbrella of 'Madeleine Wickham' and I now want to continue reading the rest of the books that she has written.

Easy to read and very enjoyable indeed - absolutely perfect when lying on a beach on holiday !!! (or even chilling out at home)

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly plotted and deliciously escapist, 19 Oct 2003
By Laura Marcus (England, UK.) - See all my reviews
This is a good book though not a great book. Once I'd put it down for the night, I didn't really care all that much about the characters. None felt all that real to me.

But what DOES work for me in Wickham's writing is her fantastic plotting. It's this that keeps you turning the pages. Plus she does brilliant walk-ons; the Australian nanny, Jenna, was fabulous with some of the best one liners. And I love how the main protagonist who caused the couples to be sharing a villa for a week was off stage most the time, invisibly orchestrating it, building to a climax where you long for him to get his come uppance but...will he?

Wickham's work is also incredibly middle class, if not slightly upper class. These are the problems of the monied; who among us has a mate with a massive five-bedroomed villa in southern Spain? And the hints that the local community don't much like the owner could have been taken further but weren't.

But an enjoyable escapist read that at times made me feel I was in the warm sunshine of southern Spain so either take it on holiday with you or, save it for the cold winter nights.
