Amazon.co.uk Review

Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic Abroad will prove a big treat for fans of The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic with the irrepressible Rebecca Bloomwood, the financial journalist with the stratospheric credit card bills, returning to the high streets. But things have changed for the impulsive shopper: "I'm a completely different person from the old Becky. I'm a reformed character. I haven't even got an overdraft!" Her high-flying boyfriend Luke has got a job in America and Becky's going with him to the land of "yellow taxi cabs and skyscrapers, and Woody Allen and Breakfast at Tiffanys"; she's also got the possibility of a television slot advising viewers on money matters. Of course New York also has department stores, lots of them:
There's always that buzz as you push open the door, that hope, that belief that this is going to be the shop of all shops, which will bring you everything you ever wanted, at magically low prices.
And Rebecca starts to indulge in the poetry of purchasing. Unfortunately she's brought down to earth with a bump, the light and glitter and the voices telling her she was the next big thing are an illusion, her debts are still scary and her boyfriend hates her. So it's back to England for Becky, for an inventive denouement and a delayed happy ending.

This is a hugely engaging novel. The breathless pace speeds you through the story, and Becky's character is so funny and feckless that you'll be laughing out loud, while turning a blind eye to your own credit card bill. This is a must-read for retail therapy addicts everywhere. --Eithne Farry --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

For Rebecca Bloomwood, life is peachy. She has a job on morning TV, telling people how to manage their money - a subject on which she is an expert. Her bank manager is actually being nice to her, despite being just a tad overdrawn. And the icing on the brioche is that her boyfriend is moving to New York ...and has asked her to go with him. New York! The Museum of Modern Art! The Guggenheim! The Metropolitan Opera House - And Becky does mean to go to all these. Honestly - it's just that it seems silly not to check out a few other places first. Like Bloomingdales. And Saks. And that amusing little place she's been told about where you can sometimes get a Prada dress for $10. Or was it $100? Anyway, it's full of fantastic bargains. "Shopaholic Abroad" - because there just aren't enough shops in Britain. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Becky is at it again and funnier than ever!, 16 Oct 2005

Becky Bloomwood is off to Manhattan, and if you liked 'CONFESSIONS' I promise you will not be disappointed by this second installment!
When her boyfriend Luke has to travel to New York City where his firm is opening a new office for a few weeks Becky is ecstatic that he has offered to take her along. There relationship had been going great and this is another step forward. Not to mention all of the great shopping opportunities in the big city...Barney's, Saks, sample sales...even the museums have stores! Since according to Becky the money you spend overseas really doesn't count she feels free to go crazy, and in her usual fashion, she does. But when Luke gets wind of her excessive spending their relationship becomes in serious jeopardy.

'SHOPAHOLIC TAKES MANHATTAN' is another riotously funny book in the 'SHOPAHOLIC' series. Be careful where you read this one because you will be laughing out loud for sure!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book, 21 Mar 2005

This review is from: Shopaholic Abroad (Paperback)
After being recommended the 'Shopaholic' series by my sister I bought all four books. I have just finished 'Shopaholic Abroad' and absolutely loved it! I enjoyed 'Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic' but found it took a while to get into (though was worth it) but this book just jumps into Becky's madness straight away and by chapter one I was hooked. I just couldn't put it down and finished it in one day!

At times you really want to scream at Becky to stop shopping but you find yourself rooting for her nonetheless! And the part at the wedding made me squirm in my seat in sympathy for her as well as laugh out loud.

The book has some really great twists and turns and the ending was great. So many books are let down by the ending but this book does not dissapoint and made me want start 'Shopaholic ties the knot' straight away.

I would definately recommend these books, but if you buy them all in one go like I did, I wouldnt read the blurbs on the back before you start reading the first one as it give's a little bit away.
