Product Description

Review
" Tomlinson's portrayal of teenage angst is quite superb, and he counters the terror and cruelty with touches that will make you laugh out loud. Brilliantly observed."
-- "Ireland on Sunday"
" Nick Tomlinson summons up an instantly recognizable world: the very early teenage and its exquisite embarrassment over trivia."
-- "The Times"

Ireland on Sunday
Tomlinson’s portrayal of teenage angst is quite superb... Savour it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting debut, 5 Aug 2005
By A Customer
From the moment I began to read this book I felt the familiar pangs of excitement, nervousness, elation, despair and wonderment that I had felt during my own time at school.
This story could easily be a work of non-fiction and it reads as though it is a first hand tale. The startling thing about it is that you are instantly transported back to your school days to a place of uncertainty and agonising hope where everything you desire is both within your reach and yet so far away.
Above all this, the characters made me feel as though I had met them before and encompassed every clique you encounter at school. Neil Flacks' private life too is insightfully written with a distinct feeling that the author KNOWS what he is talking about. It will appeal to both genders and reflects accurately the actions of teenagers who are in love and who are loved. Whatever your ge you will find memories evoked by the text which you thought were long forgotten! On top of this it is a really funny book!!
Read this book with the advice that you may find yourself reading it in the foetal position, empathically tuning into every word on the page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny........., 11 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Saint Valentine (Hardcover)
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and will certainly be eagerly awaiting the next. It made me laugh out loud and that is something I don't do too often these days.

One of the many unfortunate truths about getting older (and I am) is that you have all too often heard it before. This includes songs, jokes, stories...most things, in fact. That, though, is what makes it all the more pleasurable when you do happen across something original. And Saint Valentine is just that, original and funny.

I have only one regret on finishing this book and that is that the author didn’t write it forty something (can’t tell the exact truth) years ago, when I was a thirteen year old myself. This could have been the romantic equivalent of Mrs Beeton’s books on cookery and household management - a textbook for us girls on the workings of a young boy’s mind.

My friends and I used to think that we were the ones doing all the chasing and that they weren’t interested in us at all. How much easier things could have been for us if we had known the truth. But it’s not too late for all the young girls out there today. I’m sure things haven’t changed all that much since Neil was a teenager!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great debut novel, 18 Jul 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Saint Valentine (Hardcover)
Wry, intelligent, and evokes all the pains and naive pleasures of youth through excellent imagery and dialogue. A book to take you back to experience the heart fluttering when the object of your desire happened to look your way, and the gleeful and hopeful planning to woo them, all set against school, friendships and family life. A lovely, funny read. If you liked 'About A Boy', you'll love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars An emotional read!
I sincerely hope that, given the pink, effeminate cover on the hardback version of this book, that male book readers do not disregard this book in favour of something with guns on... Read more
