Product Description

Quint is travelling with his father, Wind Jackal, on a mission to track down and bring to justice Turbot Smeal, the man who started the fire that killed their family. Having left behind his studies at the Knights Academy, Quint is now eager to learn what it really means to be a sky pirate and to learn from his father. But Wind Jackal is consumed by his desire to capture Smeal - and his judgement is flawed. His actions endangers the lives of his crew - and his son. As they travel from the taverns and backstreets of Undertown and the wonders of the shipbuilders' yards, to the dark dangers of the Deepwoods, where Quint and Maris become separated from the rest of the crew and encounter some terrifying creatures - and finally to the mysterious, ghostly sky-wreck in Open Sky, where they discover the truth about Smeal - and face a new terror...

From the Inside Flap

'Not even here in this place of ghosts and demons and half-formed things!' bellowed the wild-eyed sky pirate captain '. . . will you be safe from my vengeance!'

After many years, Turbot Smeal, treacherous quartermaster, arsonist and destroyer of the Western Quays, is back. The taverns, Leagues’ palaces and boom docks are awash with rumours. Quint Verginix, knight academic, is called away from his studies in the great floating city. Together with his best friend, Maris, he finds himself caught up in his father, Wind Jackal's, obsessive quest for vengeance against his former quartermaster.

From the sky-ship yards of Undertown to the deserted quarries of the Edge cliff, from blood-drenched bloodoak glades to the horrors of an abandoned sky-wreck, Quint, Maris and the crew of the Galerider are drawn into an increasingly deadly pursuit – a pursuit that will ultimately lead to the clash of the sky galleons.

A swashbuckling tale of adventure and revenge, set in a world of phantasmal Edge wraiths, voracious landfish and flesh-eating trees, this latest richly detailed and superbly illustrated Edge Chronicle will grip new and old readers alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just one more to go, 9 Nov 2007
By Amanda Richards "Hotpurplekoolaid" (ECD, Guyana) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
For those not familiar with the books in this fantastically imaginative series, I'd like to provide a list of the previous books before going into book nine. The series so far is divided into three trilogies, namely the Twig Saga, the Rook Saga and the Quint Saga. The series is sometimes confusing chronologically, as the events of the Quint Saga actually happen first, but the first book of this particular trilogy is actually book four in the series.

Without spoiling the series for newcomers, I'll just say that the character Twig is from the third generation, Rook is from the fifth, and Quint is from the second generation of the character chain.

Book 1: Beyond the Deepwoods- Twig
Book 2: Stormchaser - Twig
Book 3: Midnight Over Sanctaphrax- Twig
Book 4: The Curse of the Gloamglozer- Quint
Book 5: The Last of the Sky Pirates- Rook
Book 6: Vox- Rook
Book 7: Freeglader- Rook
Book 8: The Winter Knights- Quint
Book 9: Clash of the Sky Galleons - Quint

There is also a book of four short stories called "The Lost Barkscrolls", and the final book is also allegedly in progress.

This book is the last of the Quint Saga, and is a violent and bloody tale of greed, treachery and revenge. Quint and his father are Sky Pirates, in command of the sky ship The Galerider. The story takes place for the most part aboard the ship, as their adventures take them from The Edge to the Deepwoods. Many lives are lost during the skirmishes, whether fighting the weather, carnivorous Bloodoak trees, vicious Shryke warriors or various mortal enemies, making for one of the bloodiest books in the series.

Although always interesting, it tends to get carried away at times, making the story a bit longer than it should be. The battle of the title, for example, doesn't get going until way down the book, and then is over all too quickly. However, as is the case with all the books in the series, the illustrations and character names and descriptions make for a quick page-turning read.

In order to fully enjoy this book, you'll need to read at least the first two Quint books, but why deny yourself the opportunity to read them all? Highly recommended for all young readers and for bigger folk also - Now where's that movie version?

4.0 out of 5 stars lively and exciting with great illustrations, 29 Aug 2009
By Mr. M. Jones "Jonesmz" (Chester, England) - See all my reviews

This is, chronologically, the third book in the Edge Chronicles, and it's a great read. There are plenty of factions and characters, though not the confusing profusion that was in the previous book. The story bounces around to many different and exotic locations - ledges on the cliff edge, busy taverns, sewers, deepwoods, slave markets, a sky wreck and a sky battle, with plenty of unexpected events that keep you guessing who is being deceived. It's well written, with a lively pace, and the illustrations are great to look at and really helpful in envisaging the story. There are a few character deaths and some baddies have a sadistic streak that darken the tone, but it all adds to the mix.
