Product Description

Product Description

Crispin is going to have the most super special birthday ever. He's going to the Cheezy Mouse Birthday Bonanza and all his friends are invited! On the big day everyone is happy and excited, until ...they get stuck in truly the worst traffic jam ever. At last they pull into a roadside cafe. It doesn't look very exciting, but perhaps Crispin's birthday hasn't been ruined after all ...

Apparently Crispin the Pig is a 2002 Blue Peter Award Winner, but I'm not really sure why. This is the sequel to the book; Crispin: The Pig Who Had It All. Crispin is a spoiled young pig, who in the first book learns to be less spoiled. In this book he isn't doing so well on the not being spoiled stakes as far as I can see. His parents go all out to give him the best superest birthday suprise ever, every year, and every year there is something lacking.

The writing is terrible in this book. Simple things like high five, or gimme five turn into the phrase 'gave five', which sounds totally contrived. The narrative is choppy and disjointed, with weird phrasing and strange tense changes which make it difficult to read aloud. The main character, Crispin, still seems to get his own way, mainly by shouting and sulking in the car a lot. There is no moral, and very little fun in this book. It goes nowhere, thankfully quite fast.

It was saved from a one star fate by the fact that the illustrations are quite good, albeit rather jumbled and chaotic for the younger reader. My kids (8 and 4) were bored by it, the eight year old wandered off half way through and the four year old didn't want to take it to bed with her (her good book standard). Thoroughly disappointing.
