Product Description

Fay Weldon

Simply a great read. Susan Davis is so observant, witty and trenchant I'm prepared to believe anything she tells me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down, 7 Aug 2002
By corene@freegates.be (Brussels, Belgium) - See all my reviews
This is one of the most entertaining books I've read in a long time. Susan Davis has incredible wit and imagination. The whole premise of the story - the spirit of Henry VIII entering the lives of these young women - is a lot of fun. The setting is wonderfully well-evoked and the characters are distinctive and engaging. I would recommend the Henry Game wholeheartedly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny and extremely readable, 6 Jul 2002
I brought the Henry Game for my daughter, but having read the first page, was compelled to read it first!
This is a book which explores the difficulties and experiences of adolescence in a very accurate yet comic way. Apart from having Henry to deal with, the problems and moral dilemmas of first love are realistically portrayed in the main characters' involvement with Nikos,a good-looking 'ladies man' who spends a great deal of time trying to persuade her his motives are of good intent. It also explores the rivalry which can occur between friends, (one many teenagers are sure to recognise) which is given an interesting twist through the use of Henry as the reason.
As well as the problems associated with their friendships and love life, the trauma of embarassing parents is covered in Abbies frustration with her mother who has a fondness for fluffy slippers and cups of cocoa, in comparison to her friends' mother who wears large earrings and throws pots in the basement. The book is a wonderful concoction of the supernatural with the mundane reality of many teenagers lives, yet ultimately school and parents become a welcome respite from the chaos Henry has wreaked with their lives. I found this a hilarious and very enjoyable book which was difficult to put down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Henry VIII as a ghost, 10 Oct 2007
By Wyvernfriend (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews

And it's a pretty believable ghost, you can imagine him juggling several women and being arrogant with all of them.

The three friends who call him up; Abbie, Marina and Lauren are interesting characters and show a variety of trouble in their lives. Their lives become complicated when they call up Henry VIII using a homemade Ouija board. When they stop playing, he isn't finished and their lives become very complicated and dangerous.

It's a fun read and the three are pretty typical teenagers but there were times when the flow jumped so I didn't find it quite as good as it might have been, still it wasn't a bad read.
