Amazon.co.uk Review

When a teen magazine begins its hunt for a new cover girl, three friends, each very different in style and personality, become obsessed by the way they look. As Nadine starts to change her appearance, Magda becomes more infatuated by designer labels and their best friend Ellie, who feels plain in comparison to her two more glamorous colleagues, finds herself tumbling into the abyss of bulimia.

A sharp, well-observed and uncomfortable look at the teenage years, Girls Under Pressure successfully highlights the fears of a group of young girls on the cusp of adulthood. With her three main characters struggling to come to terms with who they are, Wilson still manages to maintain a sense of humour which somehow helps to make the horror of the story even more real. --Susan Harrison --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

Ellie is convinced that she has to go on a diet, even though her friends Nadine and Magda think that she's being silly. But it's alright for them - Nadine has the chance to be a real cover girl and Magda is gorgeous, although boys do always seem to get the wrong idea about her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book review by Gemma O'Neill, 23 Mar 2003
Well, what can I say? Yet another dramatic tale from Jaqueline Wilson's giant range of books and like the rest of them this one's just as addictive.
As many of us girls know, growing up isn't one of the easiest things in the world. There's school, friends and not to mention boys! But when you've got a fixation with your weight, things just get that bit more frustrating!
This is the issue with Ellie, a normal teen with all the problems that come with it. In her eyes she's fat, chubby, big - however you want to put it she's not happy with her weight! Her friends Magda and Nadine try to support her in an attempt to lose weight but Ellie can't help feeling slightly jealous about there slinky figures. As her obsession begins to spiral out of control, an old friend falls ill with anorexia. Finally Ellie realises that by starving and making herself sick she's not doing anyone any favours!
This brilliant book really lets the reader have an insight into how pressurised teens are to become thin, and Jaqueline Wilson delivers a clear point without patronising or lecturing. A book not to be missed!!!!

By Gemma O'Neill, Year 8, Kingsfield School, Bristol.

1.0 out of 5 stars A real missed opportunity, 8 Feb 2002
By A Customer
I was very saddened by "Girls Under Pressure", having mormally been a fan of Jacqueline Wilson's books. Sadly, this one left me with a nasty taste in my mouth.

It was good to see her tackle something as important as eating disorders in a novel for children but either lack of research or lack of understanding has led to this book giving a dangerously misleading moral.

The girl who becomes anorexic in the story does so simply because she wants to be as thin as a model. Surely in this day and age, people now realise that eating disorders are not about food and weight but about low self esteem and poor body image. Ms Wilson really should have known better than to cash in on the misleading media image of anorexia as just a "slimmer's disease".

"Girls Under Pressure" only adds to the misrepresentation of a deadly illness and it left me feeling very sad indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book by Jaqueline Wilson!, 2 May 2000
By A Customer
I have read Girls in Love and it was brill, but this one has to be be even better! It has a really good storyline that is true to real-life situations. When Ellie gets an eating disorder it got me thinking about how serious Bulimia really is. All my friends and othere people at my school love this book and I would recommend it to all girls from 11 to 16. I have read Girls Out Late and its really good.
