Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Your privacy has expired, runs the strapline of Lury.Gibson's compulsive Dangerous Data--and the dot joining their names rather than an ampersand tells us that this is a hi-tech thriller, with the dissemination of personal data forming as much of a threat as physical violence, which makes this a salutary read. The duo's protagonist may be called Dogg, but he's a data detective rather than a gangsta rapper, and his speciality is the hidden strata of human lives. With just one fact , however bare, Dogg can fill in the details of a whole life. For a client called James, Dogg agrees to track down the mysterious, elusive Cynthia... and soon finds himself in a maelstrom of mystifying data. And Cynthia is slowly revealed as living a very strange life indeed.

What makes Dangerous Data so insidiously beguiling is its unique format: Set against Dogg's first-person narrative are the data sheets by which he peels away Cynthia's protective cover, and as the plot advances, we're never allowed to forget that everything he learns about her is just as applicable to us--most of us might now be electronically stripped bare in quite the same fashion:

I can even get into bed with our Cynthia. She's filled in one of those sex surveys, in a mag called Emmanuelle she gets on private subscription--membership stuff. But however private, the mag still has a database... so in the safety of a questionnaire, she feels her dark secret is being projected onto black walls. She runs her hands over the invisible words on the wall...how she feels about oral sex. Her favourite position. Her most complete sexual experience...

Guardian
'A new breed of thriller...terrifyingly convincing...I doubt there will be a more important book published this year'

5.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Data - a dangerously good read, 25 Sep 2002
The use and abuse of personal data you may never knew existed. If you thought your secrets were secret, read Detective Dogg's whodunnit and be surprised. This original book is pacey and genuinely thrilling - sex, drugs and murder keep the plot moving. Time moves quickly. The punchy style and structure make it a quick read. The literary references (Shakespeare, Dickens, Elliot, Keats ....) acknowledge its hertiage. A series of deceits, some stark contrasts and surprising characters all have you wonderering what is real and what apparent. There's lots to think about and a second read adds to the enjoyment.
Q: Does Gibson live/work in Fulham? If not the location is well researched.
Undoubtably compelling, I missed breakfast to finish it. I recommend Dangerous Data wholeheartedly and am enjoying Dogg's second tale: "Blood Data" now - another to look out for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paranoid data, 8 Jul 2002

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Dangerous Data (Hardcover)
Part education part entertainment. I found myself drawn into this book by both the implications for my own life rather than the plot. Written part from the perspective of the protagonist, a data detective who goes by the pseudonym Dogg, and part from as the output of his investigations - data.

The construct of the novel makes it very readable - one page of prose facing one page of data. I found myself wondering how realistic the Dogg character was, could someone really acquire so much data about another person? Makes you think...

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you do leaves a trail, 23 Oct 2001
By simon.rider@ntl.com (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dangerous Data (Hardcover)
Fabulous read ! This story will really grip you. not only in the way it slowly peels off the layers of the plot but in the way every page could easily be directed to your own life. I've even used some of the shops mentioned.

I found this a really absorbing tale and could not put it down. It's a hell of an eye opener to our world and one of the best books of the year. As the book say, we now all live @ !
