" Real menace and a shocking climax." - "Sunday Telegraph"

Product Description

Barry and Cheryl have become famous. Living in a tower block with their two small children, they are possibly the most famous family in the country after the Royals. Their fame comes from being the subjects of a fly-on-the-wall TV documentary, but then things begin to go wrong.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Book of Our Times, 16 May 2001
By A Customer
I was looking for a book to read on the plane and spotted a promotion in the bookseller challenging that this book was as good as Whatsername (another thriller author whose name completely escapes me at this time in the afternoon, sorry about that) or my money back. A challenge indeed and a free book coming my way I thought. I had never read anything by this author before and was very pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be a total couldn't-put-it-downer. So appropriate to these days of 'Big Brother' and all the fly-on-the-wall documentaries, this storyline was all to believable and totally sucked you in. Whether you want to or not, I don't think you can help but take sides either for or against the fame hungry Cheryl, much like the rest of her viewing public. This book had excellent pace and a twist at the end which entirely unexpected. So it's no money back for me, but another Gillian White book to buy instead! Damn.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gripping but convoluted, 21 April 2001
This review is from: The Witch's Cradle (Paperback)
I stayed up all night to finish this book - it was so readable and I kept wanting to know what happened next. The story centres around Barry and Cheryl, a young, extremely poor couple who agree to become the subjects of a documentary about poverty. Though Cheryl is eager and dying for some attention, Barry is not so keen. Little do they know how they are going to be used and manipulated.

The interesting thing about this book was how my feelings for the main characters changed from chapter to chapter - especially with regard to Cheryl. At times she was so stupid I couldn't believe it, and at other times I felt really sorry for her. Though this is certainly a cautionary tale about how the media make us see things as they want us to see them, the plot did become quite implausible after a while. There were just too many incidents, and it was not too hard to guess who was behind it all. Still, if you can suspend disbelief, this is certainly a gripping story, and I would recommend it to anyone who has liked any of Gillian White's previous work.
