Amazon.co.uk Review

In Nicholas Evans' The Smoke Jumper New York native Julia Bishop has no warning that spending the summer counselling troubled teens in Montana will change her life forever. Happily in love with smokejumper and musician Ed Tully, she looks forward to spending the summer weekends with him in Missoula and is stunned and disturbed by the instant connection she feels to his best friend, Connor Ford. Connor, a Montana rancher and smokejumper, loves fighting fires almost as much as he loves photography, and before the summer has barely started, he loves Julia Bishop just as deeply. The bond between the three is strong but the work of a smokejumper is fraught with danger and the trio soon face death by fire. Survival changes their lives forever and places them on paths that divide Julia, Ed and Connor just as surely as their individual journeys bind them irrevocably together. The Smoke Jumper is a tale of loyalty and guilt, honour and selfless love, and the human cost of choices made. --Lois Faye Dyer, Amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

His name is Connor Ford and he falls like an angel of mercy from the sky, braving the flames to save the woman he loves but knows he cannot have. For Julia Bishop is the partner of his closest friend, an ambitious young musician called Ed Tully. Julia loves them both but the tragedy on Snake Mountain forces her to choose between them and burns a brand on all their hearts. With his blond, blue-eyed looks and laconic cowboy charm, Connor is the only child of a Montana rancher and a rodeo queen. Until that fateful day, he has been happy to spend his winters nurturing a career as a photographer and his summer vacations with Ed, 'smoke jumping' - being dropped by parachute to fight remote forest fires. Now, unable to be with the woman he loves, he embarks on a journey to the dark heart of human suffering, traveling to the world's worst wars and disasters to take photographs that find him fame but never happiness. Reckless of a life he no longer wants, again and again he dares death to take him, until another fateful day in another continent, when he must walk through fire once more for Julia, her child, and all that he holds dear. Nicholas Evans returns with an enthralling novel of love and loyalty, of guilt and honor. Sweeping from the towering wilds of the American West to the killing fields of Africa, The Smoke Jumper is the story of three people's quest for happiness and self-fulfillment, played out against the heroism of firefighting in the wilderness and photojournalism at the edge of human experience - a mesmerizing adventure for the spirit, told in the grandest tradition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to put down... a little gem!, 31 Jan 2002
This review is from: The Smoke Jumper (Hardcover)
When given this book for Christmas, my immediate thought was - geez, it's huge and no doubt boring coz it's by that horse whisperer guy! I had not at this point ever read or seen The Horse Whisperer and I couldn't have been more wrong. The Smoke Jumper is by far the best book I have ever read. As Evans' gripping sequence of events unfolds, you will be drawn into the Montana wilderness and catapulted to war-torn Rwanda where he takes a firm grip of your heart, mind and soul. This is a deeply satisfying read and you will not be disappointed. The Smoke Jumper delivers in full everything that anyone could ever want from a book: high drama, sizzling suspence, involved description, profound love and glorious passion. Nicholas Evans just keeps getting better and better - I cannot wait for his next book to be published!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another hit for Nicholas Evans, 7 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Smoke Jumper (Hardcover)
The Smoke Jumper is a wonderfully engaging saga, taking in the Montana wilderness and the horrors of 'ethnic cleansing' in Bosnia and Rwanda. He skillfully presents us with three characters who face an impossible dilemma and carries them through to a resolution which keeps the reader's sympathies for them all intact. As with his other novels Mr Evans pitches you right into the action, his research must take forever! I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good read with involving characters and unusual settings that stays with you when you've finished.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic read, 9 Feb 2004
Having read the horse whisperer and prefering it to the film - I read The Loop. I actually thought that the second was better than the first. I looked forward to reading the third and Oh boy - was not dissapointed. I literally had trouble putting the book down. I got so wrapped up in the characters, I felt I was sharing all the emotions I was reading about. It made me cry in places.
I recommend this book to anyone - and thank you Mr Evans for a great read - we look forward to your next one!!
