Product Description

Product Description

Following "Jesus the Man" and "Jesus of the Apocalypse", this is Thiering's third work on the life of Jesus. She takes another bold, controversial step in looking at the New Testament and develops the theory that the Book of John was written by Jesus himself.

From the Back Cover

If Jesus did not die on the cross, as Dr Barbara Thiering has maintained in her two previous books, Jesus the Man and Jesus of the Apocalypse, what was his role in the years following 33 AD, and what part did he play in the religious movement we now call Christianity?

In The Book that Jesus Wrote, the author takes yet another bold, controversial step in her unravelling of the New Testament, suggesting that the Book of John was the work of Jesus himself, assisted by his Gentile friend Philip. His sense of humour, the recollection of his own life and his struggle to move away from strict Judaism and to open the door for a new religious philosophy and structure all emerge as clues in his writing.

The result is a clear and rational explanation of how Christianity came into being, and how Jesus himself was an active and inspirational figure behind its emergence both in the East and in Rome, and later in Western Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to the drawing board for the Christian Church, 20 April 2000
By A Customer
When I was young, some 50-odd years ago, I got what was called a "decoder ring". Probably procured from a cereal box, this otherwise worthless toy became magic in the hands of an imaginative five-year-old. All the mysteries of my limited universe were solved in an instant, and I experienced both power and peace of mind from the knowledge that no secret could be concealed from me.

I have just finished Barbara Thiering's trilogy: Jesus the Man (Jesus and the Riddle of the Dead Sea Scrolls-USA edition), Jesus of the Apocalypse, and The Book That Jesus Wrote. Thiering has discovered a "decoder ring" of her own in the form of a "Pesher", which she says is found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Unlike mine, her decoder is real, and with it, she has revealed secrets which may have far-reaching, perhaps shattering consequences in modern church and theological circles.

A Pesher is a code used to decipher Biblical era texts that were written to appear one way on their face, but, after applying the Pesher, reveal an entirely different meaning underneath. The technique was used by the authors to convey sensitive, potentially dangerous information to select religious faithful, while concealing that information from their various hostile captors (Romans, Babylonians, etc.). Ironically, this technique has been so effective that the underlying truth in these texts has been hidden for millennia from the very people it was intended to inform.

Thiering's trilogy is not an easy read. She often tries to cram two pounds of revelations into a one pound bag. She assumes that the reader is already familiar with a slew of "minor" Biblical characters (several Herods, Agrippas, Antipas's, Ananus's etc.), who, through the Pesher, become far more important (and annoying) than was formerly acknowledged. The depiction of Jesus throughout her trilogy is so radically different from customary belief that you lose count of the number of traditionally accepted events (the Virgin Birth, the Crucifixion and Resurrection, the Miracles, the Sermon on the Mount, the Parables, etc.) which are tediously and summarily dismissed and reconfigured by the Pesher interpretation. In addition, not only does Jesus survive the cross to live for another 40 years, but he is the author of the Gospel of John.

In spite of some fascinating insights and cathartic exegesis, the resultant picture of "The Christ Event" painted by Thiering's Pesher translation is not pretty. It delineates the smarmy, petty internal power struggles among principal leaders within the Judaic and early Christian churches. You will learn more than you ever wanted to know about the influence and arcane practices of the Essenes, who, like it or not, are indispensable and crucial in the Pesher scheme of things.

The importance and validity of Thiering's work will have to be tested over time, but, in the meantime, once you have read her trilogy, you cannot help but question, if not significantly revise, traditional understanding of events described in the Bible and collateral texts. If her research and conclusions hold up to scrutiny, the impact on Christianity and its institutions will be enormous and undeniable. At the very least, you should be able to sue your Sunday school teacher for malpractice. (Originally submitted mid-1999.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Provides intellectual liberation for thinking people., 8 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This book, her third, continues to underscore that the Gospel stories are in fact much more extraordinary and fascinating than the Christian view suggests. We see how a small group of mostly men deliberately and brilliantly fashioned a theology and then built a church for the espousal of the most radical set of values we have today. The secret of their success - in part - was to clothe thier ideology and history in myths and mysteries which they (correctly) guessed would be believed by the masses. It is clear that they themselves struggled with the question of the ethics of so doing. This book is the straw which will break the back of Christianty in its current form - and provides the Churches with the opportunity for renewal - without the fairy tales. To do otherwise is to seek to perpetuate the treatment of all of us as 'babes' - in exactly the way the founders of the Church did. After 2000 years, a new strategy is required if Christian values are to be realised on Earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intensely liberating!, 30 Dec 2004
Read the real story about Jesus with all. The incredible sense of detail that BT master does her credit. There's not much I can say except that I'm dead sure she's right. And that everyone should know what she says. In comparison with many other scholars I've read she's one of the people I respect the most - not because she's right but because she wants to share and debate her theories openly with others (consider joining the list "qumran-origins" - Yahoo groups!). This book is destined to become one of the those that will change the life of millions of people.
