5.0 out of 5 stars From the rear cover, 24 Jun 2007
When Marianne's parents died, leaving control of their fortune to her feared older brother, she struggled to make her way as a student in America - and her old home began to seem as unreal as a fairy tale, her childhood there as a dream......

Until the Magus came to claim her, and the Black Madam to destroy her and the Manticore to hunt her down through the streets of another world - for there was magic in Marianne's blood and magic in her soul.

And in a battle fought in an everchanging world of warped time and wicked magic, it is the souls of Marianne and her family that are the ultimate prizes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, 4 April 2007
By A. G. Williams (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a very unusual contemporary fantasy trilogy about a young woman living in the present-day USA, although with ancestry stretching back to a small (and fictitious) country in a very remote part of the Middle East, where magic is still practised - and it works.

She unwittingly becomes involved in a battle between representatives of the two parts of her divided ancestral country: one good, the other evil. As a result, she is thrown into several other, totally bizarre, magical worlds, where she has to rely on her wits to survive.

This is a beautifully written, exciting and romantic adventure story, with a plot quite unlike anything else I have ever read. It is my favourite contemporary fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic adventures with Marianne, 6 July 2009
These three stories written several years ago tell the magical adventures of Marianne and her friends (and enemies). In the first book she discovers her magical background just in time to be attacked by her arch enemy and sent to a different world where all the rules are different, and she can't remember her past. The second book tells how she manages to change her life, and the third book is an adventure to return a treasure, that if not returned will change the world. All three books show us how brave and resourseful Marianne is. All in all a wonderful trio of fun and fantasy.
