This book is an entertaining view of Parish life, framed in the setting of the Parish Magazine of St Yorick's, appropriately entitled "The Skull". Many of the characters, their words, attitudes and actions are astonishingly real. By the end of the book you really have the feeling you know some of them.

It must be a difficult task to create the dynamics of Church life with its varied characters as well as to keep within the structure of a Parish magazine and at the same time to sustain the humour throughout the twelve chapters of the Church year.

Adrian Plass succeeds by going "over the top" a little in caricature and language, and by including what would more realistically be verbal dialogue to give continuity to some of the sequences.

An entertaining book, plenty to chuckle at, and a few thoughts to ponder.
