Review
'This is a great plum pudding of a book stuffed with interesting titbits, pithy summaries, tantalizing tastes of those novels you've always meant to read' -- Reference Reviews

The characters in this dictionary are taken from plays, novels and poems written in English between the fourteenth century and 2003. This revised and updated edition includes over 6,500 entries, an index of authors, eight short essays and lists of major literary award winners. The best thing about a book like this is checking to see if any of your personal favourites have been left out. I was particularly surprised not to find any mention of Cassandra Mortmain, narrator of Dodie Smith's I Capture The Castle, or any of the characters from Richard Russo's Pulitzer Prize-winning Empire Falls. Heroes and heroines from trendier recent bestsellers, including Nazneen from Monica Ali's Brick Lane, are pretty well represented and childrens' favourites from The Jungle Book to Harry Potter make a good showing. But famous figures from the classics are the most comprehensively covered group. A paradise for bookish browsers. (Kirkus UK)
