3.0 out of 5 stars Visual Basic for Applications Beginning Course, 8 Mar 2003
By A Customer
A worthy project, seemingly, but an execution that falls between stools.

The book presents quite a useful introduction to general VBA programming tools and concepts and shows the reader how to set up an easy connection to the MSDN collection. Useful achievements in themselves.

However, the mode of presentation leaves the beginner still a beginner in almost all respects. The key progamming ideas are introduced piecemeal over the course of the introductory peek at the range of Office applications. The reader builds up a set of general ideas, but is never shown how to manipulate data in any significant way in any one application - surely the goal of anyone trying to learn some useful VBA! (It neglects even to warn about the consequences of not using an 'Option Explicit' statement at the top of any application's General object, something which just about every introduction to the Visual Basic programming language justifiably labours.)

All in all, a well-intentioned but inadequate volume at the price. Far better value is the Tidwell and Thomas(2001) 'Microsoft Office 2000 with VBA' from the same publisher (Course Technology), which has a similarly broad sweep but uses a project-based approach to introduce some real data-handling within each application. Although it is pitched still very much at an introductory programming level, the latter book is much better value, even at a 50% greater price (though for a similar or lower price the would-be programmer could purchase some much better application-specific VBA books, such as the admirable 'Definitive Guide to Excel VBA' by Michael Kofler).

Not really worth anything like the cover price.
