Product Description

Product Description
This is a textual overview of the fundamental objectives and outlooks of ethical theory. Concise yet comprehensive, this text draws on many examples from classical and contemporary sources. This book will challenge students to develop their own moral theories and to competently reason through ethical problems for themselves.

2.0 out of 5 stars A useful introduction., 2 Jul 2002
Louis Pojman teaches at the United States Military Academy, West Point, and wrote this book as a teaching aid for, in his own words, "undergraduates in ethics courses." As such it sets out to be a methodical examination of the theory, purpose and application of ethics, and is written in an easily readable style with some well-chosen examples.

For this ease of use, however, some sacrifices have been made: each of Pojman's chapters introduces a topic in an engaging manner by simplifying it, or worse. Two examples:
the potentially useful chapter on Kant's Categorical Imperative confuses duty with permission, creating major problems with his analysis;
his examination of Natural law is inadequate, and not referred to in his chapter on 'religion and ethics,' so he overlooks a fundamental moral philosophy offered by religion - the fulfilment of human nature.

The usefulness of this book depends upon the level of study that the student requires. Because of its limitations, it is more useful as an introduction for A' Level (or equivalent high school) students, to be followed up with more authoritative reading, than it is as a primary resource for undergraduates.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory text, 10 Aug 2007
By John C. Macdonald "johnmac" (Cheshire,UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An up to date and comprehensive introductory text. Pojman writes with engaging style and excellent clarity across the full range of moral philosophy. The "further reflection" sections aid learning consolidation and encourage further study. There are useful notes and "further reading" recommendations.
An important point for readers to consider is Pojman's objectivism, hence 'Discovering' Right and Wrong and I would strongly suggest complementing this book with something like Mackie's "Ethics:Inventing Right and Wrong". Pojman, a one time student of Mackie, clearly (but respectfully) rebels against his teacher.
