2.0 out of 5 stars nice concept, more attention to detail needed , 3 Jan 2009

(REAL NAME)
This book discusses practical issues surrounding the use of Monte Carlo techniques. It is written in a fairly down-to-earth way, with numerous examples.

There is not a lot in the way of theory, and I would prefer more detail in the background of many of the algorithms. This is a matter of personal taste, and there is always a trade-off between theory and practical advice in this area.

Poor attention to detail and proofreading, however, are the main problems with this book. The list of errata from the author's website is long, and far from complete! There are some major errors; for example, in the justification of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. Issues such as this detract from the pedagogical value of what would otherwise be a considerably better book.

It appears the author is retired, which may imply the chances of these issues being rectified in subsequent editions are poor.
