Product Description

Product Description
Updated to current C++ standards in 1999, this book teaches all the important topics in CS1 and CS2 in one volume. A thorough overview of program design tools, such as object-oriented design, recursive design, structured design, and testing strategies is provided along with a complete case study at the end of each section reinforces readers understanding of concepts. There are numerous programming problems and projects at the end of each chapter as well as notes of interest on CS topics. An accompanying website provides C++ code for all case study programs, and complete C++ programs, presented in the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dull, plodding, and out of date, 30 Jul 2008
By A. J. HAWKEN "Tony Hawken" (London - UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book covers both programming and data structures using C++. The first section of the book uses the procedural paradigm and includes top-down design. The programs included use the old standard, and the description of them is rather verbose. I cannot think why, if the book is published in 2000, the old standard is being used. There is a small section on program design, but this is not explained clearly at all. There are however some useful bits about debugging and program testing. At the end of each chapter there are many exercises. These are rather boring and often include a contrived scenario involving a fictitious company.

Later on classes and the features of object-oriented programming are dealt with. This involves elements of design using ADTs, and this too is not well explained.

Finally at the end section of the book the usual data structures that you would expect to see appear. This section also suffers from using the old standard. In particular a vector class is implented, rather than use the vector class that is already present in the current standard.

I fail to see why the book is still being printed, as C++ is now longer used for the CS1 and CS2 sylabuses. Also, if you intend to use it in the UK for some other purpose, it would have limited use, as you would have to rewrite all the code if you intend using a modern C++ compiler. Unless of couse you are a college such as Croydon college that still uses Turbo C++ for DOS.
