Product Description

Review

"An enjoyable, exhaustive, and often insightful look at what turns us on-sure to excite readers."
-Kirkus Reviews
"In a stroke of ingenuity, Ogas and Gaddam circumvent the deepest limitation of standard psychological surveys: that they merely tap undergraduates' socially acceptable responses, a flaw nowhere more damaging than in the touchy realm of sexuality. "A Billion Wicked Thoughts" is a goldmine of information about this hugely important topic, and, not surprisingly, gripping and sometimes disturbing reading."
-Steven Pinker, Harvard College Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of "How the Mind Works" and "The Blank Slate"
"A refreshing look at the big picture of human sexuality, informed by the ultimate unobtrusive source of data, the internet... Regardless of your background, you're in for a treat... If you want answers to pretty much anything about sexual desire, this is the book for you."
-From the Foreword by Catherine Salmo

"This lively, fascinating book is almost as titillating as the internet porn it describes. Ogas and Gaddam offer 21st century insights into sexual desire, offering up a smorgasbord of tastes from the "vanilla" to the "squicky." Their findings about what turns folks on may surprise you. Bang Bus, anyone?"
-Robin Marantz Henig, author of "Pandora's Baby: How the First Test Tube Babies Sparked the Reproductive Revolution"
"The idea behind this book is simply brilliant: Find out how people use the internet to search for, and to display, sex-related content. After all, the internet is where many of us spend much of our day. The result is a compendium of fascinating findings about human sexuality that makes a serious scientific contribution to human sexuality, beautifully written to boot."
-J. Michael Bailey, Psychology Professor, Northwestern University, author of "The Man Who Would Be Queen"

I liked this book. Having an inquisitive mind, I'd often wondered and searched for details about the sex life of people around me, this book casts a view across a subset of what exists in front of us. I personally think that the internet has fuelled this, but I also suspect the underlying sexuality is there, and the internet has simply enabled it. Whatever the reason, this book has a good analytical view on the sexual world most people don't even know exists.

The two negative reviews of this book seem very unfair to me.

The claim that "most of their data comes from a single online survey" simply isn't true. Nor is the claim that the book "is basically a list of porn websites".

I found this book extremely interesting, and read it all in a day's sitting. The book has copious end notes and a fine bibliography, so it is easy to check the authors' claims. It is exceptionally well-researched and based on solid evidence and science. It will show you the mechanisms behind your sexual desires. I found it wonderfully demystifying and educational, well written, and very entertaining. If you want to have the curtain pulled back on the mechanisms underlying your desires and your partners' desires, and you want a new perspective on the culture you live in, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Someone recommended that I read this book as I'm studying the psychology of dominant/submissive relationships and this book provides an absolutely brilliant insight into the whole field of human desire and sexuality.

this book shows what goes through peoples minds when they are alone and do not have the 'civilising processes' of shame or social influences to think about. a good book.
