5.0 out of 5 stars Metres, Money and Mormons, 23 Sep 2002
By Steve Hopkins (Clodock, Herefordshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Simon Worrall's "Poet and Murderer" has to be the best true crime story you'll read all year - and maybe next year too. Even if you don't know much about Emily Dickenson or the Mormons you're sure to be gripped by the sheer force of Worrall's narrative, shocked by the horrific lengths to which the forger, Hoffman went, and, well, saddened at best, by the extraordinary lengths to which senior members of the Mormon church went to acquire his forgeries. Why would they - and others - do that? You'll have to read the book to find out. How did Hoffman do it? You'll have to read the book to find out. This book has garnered great reviews from heavyweight authors, on both sides of the Atlantic. You won't be disappointed. Honest.

5.0 out of 5 stars A master forger revealed, 14 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This is a fascinating narrative, which does not just offer a positive lexicon of forgery (crime and screen writers will want to mine this book) but offers a deep insight into the criminal mind.A real one-off. I could not put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Literary/Criminal Suspense, 22 Sep 2002
By A Customer
This is the best book of literary and criminal suspense I've read in a long time. It's a true story that starts in a the small New England college town where Emily Dickinson was born, and ends up in the sordid, murderous world of the 20th century's most notorious forger. Worrall kept me turning pages to see how a diabolical forger could have fooled the literary world with his forgery of a Dickinson poem, how an Amherst library curator faced off against Sothebys (the international auction gallery), how a young Mormon tried to bring down his church with his forgeries, how he forged a shopping list of American writers, and how he murdered two people to cover his tracks.
Worrall delves the psychology of both Dickinson, the reclusive poet, and Mark Hofmann, the brilliant, deadly forger.
Great stuff.
