Product Description

Review

‘… it will most certainly appeal also to serious amateur astronomers with a keen interest in the Moon … The Clementine Atlas of the Moon is undoubtedly the most authoritative source of lunar nomenclature currently available … the atlas is an indispensable reference to lunar surface features (especially on the far side), the geology surrounding features and lunar nomenclature.’ Astronomy & Space

‘Clementine Atlas has quickly become on of the lunar references that I use the most. It's the most convenient and accurate resource for identifying named features. It's also a great research tool … Clementine Atlas reigns as the most comprehensive atlas of the entire Moon.’ Sky & Telescope

'The text throughout is both accessible and non-technical.' Journal of the British Astronomical Association

‘This is a very comprehensive Atlas of the Moon … an essential reference work for those who study and/or observe our near neighbour.’ Spaceflight

‘This splendid book is timely in view of the growing interest in stepping up exploration of the Moon, and will stand as a landmark publication in lunar studies. A ‘must‘ for all those interested in the Earth's satellite.‘ Geological Magazine

Product Description

The highly successful Clementine mission to the Moon in 1994 gave scientists their first global look at the Moon, and both the near and far side were mapped. This atlas is based on the data collected by the Clementine mission. It covers the entire Moon in 144 Lunar Astronautical Charts (LACs), and represents the most complete lunar nomenclature database in existence, listing virtually all named craters and other features. This is the first atlas to show the entire lunar surface in uniform scale and format. A section of colour plates show lunar composition and physical properties, and the atlas also includes a brief history of lunar science and exploration. The Clementine Atlas of the Moon will appeal to both professional planetary and space scientists, and serious amateur astronomers.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Clementine Atlas of the Moon, 22 Nov 2005
By Andrew R Brown (Ashford, Kent, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Excellent. A must for all people interested in the moon. The only slight bug bear is that some of the images towards the beginning are so compressed that they lack detail. Other than that an excellent book.

The text is easy to read, the Clementine mission well described, & the charts treat the near & far sides of the moon equally in stunning detail. The charts are shown with actual Clementine images & a labled airbrush map.

There are a few minor mistakes on the airbrush maps, but the authors do mention this & to be honest, you would really have to look very hard to find them. If you do find any, then obviously the Clementine image map is the correct one.

Would love to see this kind of publication for Venus, Mars, Io, Ganymede, etc.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better maps on internet for free, 27 Nov 2009
By J. I. Martinez (Spain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It's a well presented book, but most of the pages include maps of lunar surface that lack detail and are to small for an usable observation.
If you are looking for a Moon atlas, a better option is to download maps from the internet. Lunar and Planetary Institute for instance, has some excellent Lunar Charts.
I could only recomend the book if you were a fanatic of Clementine mission, but otherwise it is better to look elsewhere.
