Product Description

Review
‘The third part consists of an extensive set of test checklists, templates and proformas, ready to use or to tailor to your specific requirements. To have these all in one place and already standardised is alone worth the price of the book … covers all aspects of testing for both in-house and third-party developed software. I heartily recommend that any test professional looking for an easier life gets a copy of this book. I believe that even the most hardened of us would gain from reading it.’ Professional Tester

‘Every tester should have a copy.’ Geoff Thompson

‘When asked for my opinion about software testing I referred naturally to Testing IT. Imagine a light being switched on! Almost overnight everyone in the organisation was walking around with versions of the V-lifecycle … has made a difference to two organisations that were lost in a testing strategy wilderness.’ Martin Allen, Software Team Leader

‘An off-the-shelf set of procedures, complete with forms and checklists, for much less than the price of a day’s work, must be a bargain … The forms are a joy to anyone in quality assurance … Overall this is a good started on procedures for someone who understand testing.’ Brian Peaker, Computer Bulletin

‘… this is one of the most valuable books I have in my collection. I will certainly refer to it regularly and would recommend that both new and ‘old lag’ testers have a copy close at hand. It would give any organization a kick-start in developing an effective test process.’ Geoff Thompson, Software Testing, Verification and Reliability

Product Description
This pragmatic guide provides a testing framework that can be used by all members of staff involved in software development and testing within an organisation to improve the quality and to reduce timescales, effort, and cost. This book covers all aspects of testing, as well as software developed or modified in-house, the modification or extension of existing legacy software systems, as well as software developed on behalf of an organisation by a third party. This framework can be customised to match the particular testing requirements of any particular organisation, and a series of real-world case studies are provided to illustrate how this can be achieved. The book also provides a comprehensive set of standard testing document templates, proformas, and checklists for the reader to use in their testing projects. These items are provided electronically, which allows the reader to customised them to match the particular requirements of their business.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good practical guide for test professionals, 2 Aug 2001
By A Customer
I have read several books on software testing and used them in my work. Most of the books have been styled towards the academic rather then the practical and whilst learning in the classroom is useful before being let loose in the 'real world' for many of us we want to get straight to the point and eliminate the noise around us. This book does that. it is the first book that for me concentrates solely on the real world application of software testing techniques.

Chapters on unit, systems integration, user acceptance, and operations acceptance testing have standardised headings which makes the reading and comparison of these topics alot easier.

The book also contains 5 case studies. I personally find limited use from case studies in general and find them more interesting to read rather than illuminating.

There are also several templates that can be used and a very useful appendix on Automated Testing Tool Selection Criteria, something I used but in a different guise when researching test tools for a former employer.

Overall I would recommend this book to those who want the no-nonsense and practical approach to testing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical with a capital 'P', 2 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Perhaps you have many years experience in software development but, like myself, it is on a very rare occasion that you get to listen to someone who really understands software testing. I met the author, John Watkins, several months before the publication of Testing IT. John was hosting seminars on software testing and I had the good fortune to be in the audience.

Having to wait for publication of his book, I was anxious to see if the author was able to transfer his obvious knowledge and experience into print - I was not disappointed.

Anyone who is conversant with software testing could claim justifiably that no new revolutionary techniques are on offer in Testing IT. In my opinion, long established testing techniques are sufficient for most categories of software - and these are covered expertly in the early chapters. Frankly, it is often the lack of application and management of these techniques by a professional testing team that dooms projects to a disaster catalogue. With its emphasis on lifecycles, processes and team organisation, this book places testing techniques within a proper context.

Chapters 2 to 4 contain enough quality information alone to support a re-evaluation of any organisation's testing philosophy and strategy. For example, only in exceptional circumstances should a lifecycle not follow the V-model as described in Chapter 4. This model's focus on test preparation in early phases is legendary, or rather, it should be. Chapters 5 through 11 detail the test phases, which do become repetitive in places, but this is a necessary aspect of process specification. All five Illustrative Case Studies in Chapters 11 to 18 are, well, illustrative - they more than confirm that the author is not an ivory tower theorist.

Testing IT is a book I am convinced I will return to on numerous occasions in search of extra guidance on test process and its artefacts. It will not have the opportunity to gather much dust on my bookshelf.

3.0 out of 5 stars Accurate but nothing new for professionals..., 19 Sep 2003
By A Customer
There's nothing wrong with this book, it's just that for software testing and/or QA professionals, there's nothing new in this book. If you're just starting out in the industry it might be helpful in explaining a limited number of the most basic theoretical concepts - however, I would recommend you get your company to send you on the ISEB Foundation Course in Software Testing (or even get the home study version) - it's much more expensive than a book, but it's comprehensive, clearly explained, and sets/adheres to the industry standards.
Perhaps I've been unfairly harsh towards this book, as no book, could come close to being as comprehensive as the BCS ISEB course, but there are also more useful books out there.
