‘… there is much that is excellent in the book. As a book of history, myth, literature, photography and expeditionary experiences, Glorious Eclipses is outstanding.’ Jay M. Pasachoff, Nature

‘… an impressive and well illustrated large-format book containing poster-sized colour images and diagrams that will be ideal for new amateur astronomy enthusiasts or potential eclipse fans of the future … everyone who browses through Glorious Eclipses will derive a sense of enchantment and wonder at these magnificent events.’ Serge Koutchmy, Physics World

‘If you want to take up eclipse chasing, the book’s maps of future eclipses will tell you when and where to be.’ Martin Ince, Mathematics and Physics

‘This beautifully illustrated and written work has something for everyone - the seasoned eclipse chaser and the newcomer alike … A recommended buy! Brian Halls, Astronomy Now

‘Following the plethora of books which appeared to accompany the 1999 solar eclipse, here is a large-format book intended to do justice to an impressive selection of eclipse images and related illustrations. A chapter is devoted to a full account of the 1999 event … The enthusiasm, even passion, of the authors for their subject has clearly lost nothing in translation and is evident in an engaging prose style … a spectacular celebration of eclipses which can be recommended to enthusiast and general reader alike.’ Paul Stephens, Popular Astronomy

‘The book is of coffee-table proportions and, with nearly 200 profusely and colourfully illustrated pages, a price tag of only £25 represents very good value.’ David Pike, The Observatory

‘… attractive and beautifully illustrated book … a veritable mine of information on eclipses and is suitable for anyone who has an interest in eclipses … this is a splendid book profusely illustrated …’. F. Richard Stephenson, Astronomy & Geophysics

Product Description

This beautiful large-format volume deals with eclipses of all kinds - lunar, solar and even those elsewhere in the Solar System and beyond. Bringing together in one place all aspects of eclipses, and lavishly illustrated throughout, Glorious Eclipses covers the history of eclipses from ancient times, the celestial mechanics involved, their observation and scientific interest. Personal accounts are given of recent eclipses, up to and including the last total solar eclipse of the twentieth century: the one on August 11th 1999 that passed across Europe, Romania, Turkey and India. This unique book contains the best photographs taken all along its path and is the perfect souvenir for all those who tried or wished to see it. In addition, it contains all you need to know about forthcoming eclipses up to 2060, complete with NASA maps and data, making it the perfect resource for both novice and veteran eclipse-chasers.

5.0 out of 5 stars an incredible book with beautiful eclipse photography , 25 Oct 2007
By Br Thomas - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been interested in eclipses for quite some time now. I have many titles relating to eclipses but this book has to be one of my favourites. This is a large-format book which makes the photographs and diagrams look really vivid. I particulary like the drawing made by E.L. Trouvelot during the 1878 total eclipse which shows very fine structures in the solar corona, it almost makes you think it's a real photo. The history and mythology of eclipses I find is really interesting. The science of eclipses are revealed in this book i.e. the general theory of relativity, the discovery of helium in the spectroscope during an eclipse and many others. There's a chapter devoted to the eclipse of 11th august 1999 for those who want to keep a record of that great eclipse or for those who wanted to see it or missed it. There's also chapter for future eclipses of the sun until 2060 and total eclipses of the moon until 2020. overall, this is a stunning book with great information, beautiful photographs, diagrams and the excellent description of the journey of an eclipse-chaser. A highly recommended book. 5 STARS.
