Product Description

Review

‘The book’s strengths include a very readable style, a multi-disciplinary authorship and chapters that cover the many diverse aspects of psychiatric intensive care. When reading it you get the firm impression that most of the chapters are written by people with real ‘hands on’ practical experience in their fields.’ Bulletin of the National Association of Psychiatric Intensive Care Units

‘I strongly recommend this book. It should have wide appeal to a multi-disciplinary audience. It is soundly researched, able constructed and well written. I suspect that it will sit well in all mental health settings and on individual professional’s bookshelves, and that in time it will become a well-thumbed and much appreciated text.’ Mental Health Practice

‘The book is packed full of extremely sensible advice on how to manage difficult clinical problems in the most challenging of patients. It has something for everyone - trainees, consultants, nurses, managers and those professions allied to medicine.’ Hospital Doctor

‘It is comprehensive and multi-disciplinary. It is clinically oriented and most chapters will be of interest to clinical staff working on intensive care units.’ British Journal of Psychiatry

'The concise chapters make this book easy to read and the various topics are useful to any member of an impatient team. This second edition covers areas that were not captured in the first edition.' Alyson Myers, MD, Rush University Medical Centre

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all healthcare staff working or interested in PIC, 23 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Whilst it is not the norm for me to read text books with more than a casual speed read, if that. I found this a very interesting and captivating read. The content is simple and easy to understand. Whilst it does not set the world on fire with conclusive argument or evidence based practice it is a great handbook or at the very least a good prompter for discussion or ideas. I suppose the real enthusiasm I have is just to see in print a book which gives credence to a new sub-speciality in psychiatry which has been much ignored and or maligned. Some excellent individual chapters, especially the de-escalation chapter by Roland Dix and the Therapeutic Activities by Flood and Hooton. It is also refreshing to note that these are all currently practicing professionals and respected not neccessarily for academic work but certainly for their practical credibility.

5.0 out of 5 stars This must be the definitive book on the subject of Psychiatric Intensive Care, 18 April 2008
The first edition was groundbreaking and the second maintains the top quality of the first. It is attractively produced and this time the book stays open if you lie it flat! I particularly liked the new chapters which you really can't find in any other book - psychiatric intensive care as it relates to the two specialities of Child and Adolescent mental health and to Learning Disabilities. Other new chapters are also really useful on: Users and Carers, Substance Misuse, Teamworking, Clinical Standards, Social Work and the Interface with General Psychiatry. The chapters from the first edition have all been updated. You really feel that this book has been written by clinicians who have had to manage real situations and who then come up with practical, evidence based strategies to address these issues in thoughtful and constructive ways.
