Product Description

Review

‘For readers who are already familiar with previous editions the most important aspect will be the new features of Mathematica (of which there are many). Those who are new to Mathematica will find the book indispensable … Mathematica is an extremely powerful package, and facilitates problem solving in both discrete and continuous systems. There is little doubt that electrical engineers who are prepared to invest some time learning to use it will find it of great use. This book makes learning the package a pleasure, and … may be judged excellent value.’ Dr W. D. Crowe, IEE Review

‘Everything about Mathematica and the way it has been developed is impressive … it is the most comprehensive maths package available today that covers both numeric and symbolic computation. Mathematica 3.0 is simply the new standard of excellence.’ Mike James, Scientific Computing World

‘This is a Rolls-Royce of a book - almost 1500 pages long - devoted to Mathematica, a programming language used by the scientific and high-technology community, especially in universities and colleges … Truly a compendium magna of the topic … Given the size and complexity of the book, and the fact that it’s a hard back, the price is quite modest.’ Freelance Informer

‘What Mathematica has done is to usher in a new era of fully commercialized technical software.’ Karyll Lake, Physics World

‘I recommend this text to all Mathematica users.’ Mike Denham, Computers and Chemistry

‘I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the book to any regular Mathematica user.’ Rich Townsend, The Observatory

Product Description

With over a million users around the world, the Mathematica software system created by Stephen Wolfram has defined the direction of technical computing for the past decade. The enhanced text and hypertext processing and state-of-the-art numerical computation features will ensure that Mathematica 4, takes scientific computing into the next century. The Mathematica Book continues to be the definitive reference guide to this revolutionary software package and is released in this new edition to coincide with the release of the new version of Mathematica. The Mathematica Book is a must-have purchase for anyone who wants to understand the opportunities in science, technology, business, and education made possible by Mathematica 4. This encompasses a broad audience of scientists and mathematicians; engineers; computer professionals; financial analysts; medical researchers; and students at high-school, college, and graduate levels. Written by the creator of the system, The Mathematica Book includes both a tutorial introduction and complete reference information, and contains comprehensive description of how to take advantage of Mathematica’s ability to solve myriad technical computing problems and its powerful graphical and typesetting capabilities.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very necessary guide to a colossal and inscrutable program, 18 Jun 2004
By M. Appleton - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

Mathematica isn't the kind of program you can intuitively use to any great effect. There's no graphical interface, just a very imposing blank page. Some experimentation with simple commands will tell you how infuriatingly pedantic the input protocols are (type "sin pi" and you will be harranged for not typing "Sin pi"...). Having said that, it IS the largest, most powerful and most versatile program of its kind, so any serious researcher should have it in their repetoire.

This huge book is really a vast lexicon of worked examples on Mathematica's myriad functions. Starting from probably THE most basic foundation (and I kid you not, the first example is 2 + 2 = 4), the book builds up to some really complicated and esoteric stuff. The finicky input structures are all addressed, so no need to worry. If a beginner, one can plod through the exercises in sequence and learn mountains of tricks, or a fluent user could just occasionally reference some abstruse function from time to time. This dual-format is what really makes this book great.

I first borrowed this book from my university library, having been introduced to Mathematica during my course, and it could hold a car up while the spare wheel is changed, such is the magnitude of the program. This book is indispensible, as it is simply not possible to figure Mathematica out properly within a human lifespan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent guide to Mathematica programming., 13 May 2001
By A Customer
"The Mathematica" by Stephen Wolfram is a well organized description of Mathematica system. The book is an inestimable aid in programming, both for beginners and professional users (scientifists, students, etc.). It is a wide set of commands and their options, easy to search trough due to logical stucture of the book, complete index, as well as the web of references to corresponding topics. The book gives clear explanation of algorithms and definitions used by Mathematica, and is written in very pleasent way - there is no unnecessary mess, just facts and short but complete description.I personally found the book extremely useful in my work. The author is actually the creator of Mathematica programming system, so there are no mysteries about it for him. Using "The Mathematica" book you will realize that there are no mysteries in programming for you either.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Referrence Book to Mathematica, 16 Dec 1997
By A Customer
This is the most complete reference book for the Mathematica system. However, be aware of the fact that it doesn't treat any topic in great detail (for instance, it doesn't provide a single example of a complete Mathematica program). There are many texts available for specific purposes, but this is the one that gives you the broad picture (version 3.0 comes with the Mathematica Book on line, but studying something from the screen can be a bit annoying).
