Recent advances in the study of dynamical systems have revolutionized the way that classical mechanics is taught and understood. Classical Dynamics: A Contemporary Approach is a new and comprehensive textbook that provides a complete description of this fundamental branch of physics. The authors cover all the material that one would expect to find in a standard graduate course: Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics, canonical transformations, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, perturbation methods, and rigid bodies. They also deal with more advanced topics such as the relativistic Kepler problem, Liouville and Darboux theorems, and inverse and chaotic scattering. A key feature of the book is the early introduction of geometric (differential manifold) ideas, as well as detailed treatment of topics in nonlinear dynamics (such as the KAM theorem) and continuum dynamics (including solitons). The book contains many worked examples and over 200 homework exercises. It will be an ideal textbook for graduate students of physics, applied mathematics, theoretical chemistry, and engineering, as well as a useful reference for researchers in these fields. A solutions manual is available exclusively for instructors.

Unlike traditional classical mechanics texts, this book takes a different approach to teaching by focusing on differential geometry and using it as a unifying theme. Thus, the transition from the lagrangian to the hamiltonian is seen as a mathematical simplification, as opposed to more classical texts (such as Goldstein) which leave the reader with questions such as "why do we need the hamiltonian at all?" Furthermore, the book also provides an introduction to modern dynamics - meaning chaos and non-linear dynamics, the KAM theorem, the relativstic kepler problem, and other topics not usually found in such texts and which make dynamics look like the interesting and relevant science it is. It also deals, of course, with the more traditional of mechanics - rigid body dynamics, central force problems, etc . . . and, best of all, contains many worked out examples for the reader. Finally, educators are beginning to understand that worked examples are necessary for understanding how to implement the material! However, it is not a perfect text (is there such a thing at all?). At some points rigor is lacking. At others - elegance. It also seems a bit too thick (more than 600 pages!) to be used as a textbook. There is not enough emphasis put on quantum mechanics as well. In these respects, Goldstein's and Landau's texts are still superior to this one. Landau still remains, in my opinion, the best introduction to classical dynamics out there.
