Product Description

Review

‘ … a lively, intelligent, opinionated and very well written one-volume history, traversing some well-covered territory of colonial and 20th-century Australia with a fresh eye that doesn’t fail to observe the big and small picture.’ Australian Bookseller and Publisher

‘As one of a series of works of reference, concise national histories, the book is an interesting, often brilliant combination of new and conventional scholarship, of information, opinion and ideas.’ Journal of Australian Colonial History

‘… a most impressive contribution to Australian historical literature’. Australian Book Review

‘This volume will become the standard text for many university courses in Australian history. Researchers, students and general readers will appreciate Macintrye’s deft coverage and insights.’ Michael Sturma, History

‘Macintyre’s book is the best short history of Australia since Manning Clark’s classic of 1963.’ Times Literary Supplement

'This excellent, compact volume … Macintye gives a perceptive account of the culture of sacrifice, made for the mother country in two world wars, the making of the modern, multicultural society, and, of course, looks at the unifying role of cricket.' BBC History Magazine

Product Description

Australia is the last continent to be settled by Europeans, but it also sustains a people and a culture tens of thousands of years old. For much of the past 200 years the newcomers have sought to replace the old with the new. This book tells how they imposed themselves on the land, and describes how they brought technology, institutions and ideas to make it their own. It relates the advance from penal colony to a prosperous free nation and illustrates how, in a nation created by waves of newcomers, the search for binding traditions has long been frustrated by the feeling of rootlessness. Now, with the realisation that colonisation began with invasion, present-day Australians are - more than ever before - coming to terms with their past and recognising the need to redefine and reposition Australia in a changing world. This is the most up-to-date single-volume Australian history available.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about Australian history, 10 Nov 2004
By Brigitte Hilgner (Vienna Austria) - See all my reviews

For a seminar I needed some fundamental information about Australian history, and I am very glad that I have discovered Stuart Macintyre's "Concise History"! The book provides solid information and is enjoyable to read. It addresses the needs of people who know nothing about Australia, but I guess it is also a useful reference book for those who are already somewhat familiar with the Continent's history. The book begins at the beginning (1770) and provides information up to our day and age. It is well structured. The author tries to be as unbiased as possible (he succeeds) and does address touchy issues, such as the changing but still difficult relationship between the aborigines and those who came later and the attitude to immigrants ("Whites, please!"). For all the quotations, sources are mentioned, and the "Guide to further reading" is good and comprehensive. A book well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Godsend Of A Book, 1 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This is the exact book that a tutor of mine at university was ramming down our throats recently, and, predictably, only a handful of us could be bothered to actually buy it.

But it's really easy to read and understand, it's not heavy or patronising at all, it's great. I used it now and again for exam revision, passed the exam by a mile, then actually read the whole thing out of interest. Top book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, 20 Dec 2008
By Mr. S. Dunne - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A well balanced and informative account of the history of Australia in one volume. In may ways this work leaves room for inquisitive exploration outside of this volume by the reader, rather than make a hash of it within a book of this size: thereby concentrating the focus of inquiry on exactly what is fundamentally important to know.
If you want a scholarly and comprehensive articulation of Australia, look no further. If you are looking for a narrative with interesting tidbits - this isn't for you.
In a nutshell, great value for money. The only 'history' of Australia I'll ever need.
