‘An appetising smorgasbord … a pleasure to read.’ Times Higher Education Supplement

Product Description

Cutting across boundaries of art and science, evolution is a fundamental process that has beguiled thinkers through the ages. This collection draws together world-renowned thinkers and communicators with their own intriguing insights. In these essays they offer a feast of dazzling thoughts and ideas to challenge and enthral the reader. Why and how do civilizations and societies change over time? Why do our cells develop the way they do? Why are some villages still villages while others have grown into vast cities? Can we learn from our evolutionary past to plan a better future for our health and society? Tracing a line from the history of biological evolution, through the evolution of cultures, society, science and the universe, Evolution brings together intriguing parallels from all levels of life. From the evolution of the developing embryo to the evolution of a developing star, common threads develop into a fascinating story.

First Sentence
Perhaps there will not always be an England (particularly on time scales favoured by palaeontologists), but a few miles of Channel and nearly a thousand years of freedom from full-scale invasion (1066 and all that) have produced a plethora of British distinctions, both idiosyncratic and deeply philosophical, from continental preferences and modes of thought. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Eight Enlightening Essays on Evolution. Engaging. Excellent., 25 Mar 1999
By A Customer
In this slim volume is a gathering of eight enlightening essays that have, as their thematic nexus, the concept of evolution. The contributors have written on evolution in terms of: biology and its historical roots (an essay that brought me back to a unique course I took in my freshman year at Harpur College SUNY); devolopment of the embryo; human history since the last ice age; the city; developmental biology and the emergence of human capacities; the novel; the cosmos; and the unfolding, tool-driven revolutionary birth of science. This is informative intellectual thinking at its best. Highly recommended. Reviewed by Gerry Stern, founding partner, Stern & Associates and HRconsultant.com InfoCenter.
