Review
Review of the hardback: ‘Ancient Egyptian Materials and Technology … augments and extends Lucas’s work. The editors have enlisted the specialist knowledge of thirty-four scholars to accomplish their purpose, and the resulting volume is very impressive.’ Times Literary Supplement

Product Description
This is a study of the procurement and processing of raw materials employed by the ancient Egyptians over the five millennia of the Predynastic and Pharaonic periods (c.5500–332 BC). During this time, not only were there variations in the preferred materials for particular types of artefacts, but also gradual processes of technological change, and the industries of the Chalcolithic period were complemented and sometimes superseded by the innovations of the Bronze and Iron Ages. Among the topics covered are stone quarrying, the building of temples and pyramids, techniques for preserving meat, fish, and poultry, glass and faience, the baking of bread, brewing of beers, preparation of oils and perfumes, and the mummification of humans and animals. Each chapter has been written by one or more specialists, drawing not only on conventional Egyptological skills but also on expertise in the natural sciences as applied to archaeological data.

First Sentence
Although most recent research into Egyptian quarrying has tended to concetrate on the large-scale procurement of limestone, sandstone and granite in the Pharaonic period, the exploitation of stone in the Nile valley can be traced back at least as early as 40,000 BP, when the Middle Palaeolithic inhabitants of Middle Egypt were quarrying and working cobbles of chert along the limestone terraces on either side of the Nile (Vermeersch et al. 1990). Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars The bible for study in this field, 5 April 2002
By A Customer
The price of this book is bit hefty. However, it has to be taken into account that this would be the only book that you actually had to buy in the study of the topic. The reason for this is that it covers every possible area of technology and materials in ancient Egypt. This includes everything from stone manufacture and soil construction to bread and beer production to mummification (and everything in between). Furthermore, each section is written by leading scholars in their field, most notably Paul T. Nicholson who writes about glass and faience (and has undertaken much work at Amarna and also a fair bit of experimental work) and Delwin Samuel, the leading (and one of the few) experts on the production of bread and beer. Each section also has the advantage of having a very detailed bibliography. Consequently, any serious student of the subject can pursue the topics raised on their own via books and journals that should be readily available at any good library (particularly university libraries).

If the price of this book does prove simply too much then I would recomment Lucas's 'Materials and Industries in Ancient Egypt', which is less that a quarter of the price. However, this book does have the disadvantage that it is 40 years old (the more expensive one is only 2 years old and so is very up-to-date); adopts a more scientific outlook (as opposed to an archaeological and social one which is also included in the other book) and has no illustrations (in contrast to the quite heavily illustrated more expensive book).

This book may be expensive, but it is worth it.
