Product Description

Review
‘In this helpful and illuminating collection of fourteen essays by RSC actors describing the roles they played with the company between 1982 and 1987, light is shed on the unique hybrid that is theatre, being a fusion of the arts and the practical and intellectual virtues.’ Gerald Werson, The Stage and Television Today

‘... there is not one among these essays which does not contain at least something of interest: a fresh insight into the meaning of a line, or a plausible explanation of hitherto inexplicable conduct on the part of a character’. Charles Osborne, The Daily Telegraph

Product Description
This is the second volume of essays by actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Fourteen actors describe the Shakespearean roles they played in productions between 1982 and 1987. The contributors are Roger Allam, Frances Barber, Kenneth Branagh, Niamh Cusack, Ben Kingsley, Ian McDiarmid, Daniel Massey, Edward Petherbridge, Alan Rickman, Fiona Shaw, Antony Sher, Juliet Stevenson, David Suchet and Zoe Wanamaker. Each gives a unique insight into the preparation and performance of a major Shakespearean role and how a character is created through responding to Shakespeare’s text, within the context of a particular director’s conception and the environment established by the designer. A brief biographical note is provided for each of the contributors and an introduction places the essays in the context of the Stratford and London stages, and of the music and design for the particular productions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Fascinating, 6 Oct 2004
By R. Leggett (uk) - See all my reviews

There is a myriad of books of directoral and academic approaches to Shakespeare, but almost none on the actors' views, After all these are people who really have to go throuogh a process with the roles. This whole series is a wonderfuly insightful glimpse into the actors' experience of different roles. The actors concerned reveal themselves to be exceptionally thoughtful and candid about their views. If only there were more books like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully insightful and interesting, 8 Sep 2004
By R. Leggett (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a terrific series of books and in wonderfully insightful to theatre fans and students as well as to Shakespeare fans and scholars. Some of the country's best actors take a fascinatingly varied approach (which adds to the interest) to talk about the challenges and interpretations for their roles. Academically, there is a plethora of literature on these parts, but to hear the comments of the people challenged with bringing them to life on stage is a breath of fresh air. There are insights into the craft of acting and one is left with great admiration for the intelligence and insight of the actors concerned - one has come to expect this of people like Sir Antony Sher, but almost all the contributors here are up to the challenge and it is heartening to read of the on-going concern for the roles as the production runs. Highly recommended.
