4.0 out of 5 stars The Development of WAP, 18 Feb 2004
Practical WAP is written for people wishing to develop internet based applications for mobile phones, the introduction firmly sets out the huge demand for mobile applications, and focuses on the amount of people now using the internet on their mobile phones and predicts large increases in users within the next few years, ‘The wireless marketplace has grown to more than 300 million users…’ (Bennett 2001:3).

The book focuses on how to develop WAP applications using the WAP standards. The book is broken down into three parts, which between them, comprise thirteen chapters. Part one, focuses on WAP specifications, Client Devices and alternatives to WAP, as well as a look at the tools required to build WAP applications. Part two explores WML (Wireless Markup Language) and WML Script (its scripting language), and time critical applications. Part three focuses on actually designing the applications and includes a case study.

This book is a complicated technical manual designed for people who are involved in the practical aspect of writing WAP code, it has limited uses for anyone outside of that circle, and is not aimed at beginners.

However, real world examples are used and these could be of benefit to software developers, and managers

One of its major shortcomings is that it was published three years ago, and much of the technology described has moved on since it was written, comments such as ‘… third generation (3G) mobile networks are under development…’ (Bennett 2001:8) are extremely outdated, as third generation phones are now widely available, and are fast becoming the industry standard.
