Product Description

Review
"An excellent overview. . . In an easily understandable way [Schwartz] explains scientific findings."--"British Medical Journal"

Product Description
This scientific thriller tells of the hunt for the cause of an enigmatic class of fatal brain infections, including mad cow disease. In nontechnical prose, Maxime Schwartz details the deadly manifestations of these diseases throughout history. He concludes with the question: should we be afraid?

3.0 out of 5 stars words, not pictures, 1 Jul 2009
By P. C. ADAMS (wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The story of the search for the causative agent of TSEs is fascinating, going through Pasteur and bacteria, viruses in early 20th century, to the recognition of prions. The historical context is well created by the author.

But it's all in words: no charts, no pictures - but the tasks of explaining molecular biology, brain disease, and genetics have become so visual in the last two decades. What a shame
