Product Description

Review

"A comprehensive, practical handbook to guide the typographer. . . . The tone, here, is that of a master craftsman; practical and informative, it neither avoids detail nor loses sight of broad principles."--Paddy Cramsie, "Times Literary Supplement

Product Description

This text is a theoretical document of Central European modernism between the World Wars and a source of working principles for the practising designer. This translation reflects Tschichold's original typography and design. It ranges from theoretical discussions of typography in the age of photography and mechanical standardization, to practical considerations in the design of business forms. The book should be of interest to designers, art historians, and all those concerned with the evolution of visual communication in the 20th century.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into 'Modern' typography, 2 May 2001
By A Customer
This book was written in 1928 and it is testament to Jan Tschichold that it is still relevant today. Unfortunately the publishers didn't read it before going to print, because the layout of the book itself is a disgrace. The book even shows two pages from a draft version where Tschichold corrects the errors they have made. That said, if you want an introduction to typography with illustrated examples then this *the* book to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A design manifesto, 6 April 2006
A design manifesto from a designer who influenced typography more than most. Don't let people tell you that because Tschichold later recanted the main arguments presented here that this isn't relevant, it STILL is.
Any serious student of design should own this book not simply borrow it from the college library. There can be few times when a whole different style of design are shown to have had a call to arms that are available to purchase still. This is the call to arms of what became the new international style of design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book you can't put down, 6 Feb 2001
By A Customer
It is exciting to read the opinions of a master at an early stage in his career where they are so powerfully expressed and challenging.

The introduction by Ruri McLean is of great interest also and helps appreciate the work in context.
