Product Description

From the Author
First all-color Gershwin "biography" --1920s-30s articles
In Gershwin in His Time, you are there at the birth of Rhapsody in Blue and Porgy and Bess, and as the critics review Gershwin's first concert performance in 1923, his first hit musical in 1919, his Pulitzer-Prize-winning Broadway political satire Of Thee I Sing, and his great symphonic works in their premiere performances! This is a very unique Gershwin "biography," illustrated in full color throughout with rare archival posters, sheet-music covers, movie stills, Broadway-show photos, record labels, theater programs, book jackets, magazine art, and set designs. It's the first Gershwin biography in color, and the first to collect complete newspaper reviews, magazine articles, and book excerpts written about the composer and his music during his lifetime. Like a scrapbook, this biographical treatment covers all of Gershwin's works, chronologically, through published articles from the 1920s and 1930s. The book provides a unique perspective not found in other available biographies, and also preserves rare reviews and critical essays on Gershwin musicals (La La Lucille, George White's Scandals, Lady Be Good, Oh Kay, Girl Crazy, Strike Up the Band, Of Thee I Sing, etc), concert works (Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, Concerto in F, etc), operas (Blue Monday, Porgy and Bess), and movie musicals (Shall We Dance, Damsel in Distress, etc). In addition, there are numerous articles by contemporary critics (and Gershwin himself) discussing Gershwin's contributions to both popular and "classical" music, and the question of the place of "jazz" in modern American music of the era. Also included are a foreword by noted composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch, a comprehensive biographical/critical introduction, and a list of Gershwin works.
