4.0 out of 5 stars Nice companion to 'Warplanes of the Third Reich', 2 Sep 2002

There are quite a few books about this subject on the market, and I rate this one second best. Top of the market in my eyes is 'Warplanes of the Third Reich' by William Green (672 pages!), but this book can serve as a nice companion or indeed as a replacement if your budget is a bit tight. The main advantage this book has compared to William Green masterpiece is the colour artwork, which is sadly lacking in the Green book. The only thing in which the comparison falls out negative against Green is the amount of information about each individual plane, but there is more general information about the Luftwaffe in WW2 to make this up. Highly recommended indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book of Two Halves, 17 Jan 2007
By A. Ginman (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hitlers Luftwaffe (Hardcover)
This book has two main sections: firstly a description and analysis of the Luftwaffe during the second world war and secondly a brief description with line drawings and colour plates showing most of the major planes used by the Luftwaffe. The analysis section is useful as it covers the major theatres of war with a separate description of the Luftwaffe's anti shipping activities, something that is not often written about. You are left with some idea of the difficulties faced fighting a war on several fronts as the Germans had to balance resources and transfer planes from front to front at short notice to meet local emergencies.

There are some splendid photographs, many showing planes on the ground surrounded by supporting groundcrew and equipment, giving lots of ideas for modelling dioramas.

The reproduction of the pictures is cheap and some of the fonts used are horrendous, but these should not detract from a useful and enjoyable book. In the forward one of the authors says that "it is bound to be a bestseller" (!) I hope his unbounded optimism was justified.
