'A superior and very English offering: mad, macabre deserves attention and applause' Sunday Telegraph 'A true original a startling work. Eerie and satisfying - a horro story told with tenderness' Sunday Times 'Has a dreamlike quality - yet this is a fairytale gone gruesomely wrong - a sinister, powerful book. 5.0 out of 5 stars A disturbing tale of four sisters and the secrets of their past, 7 Feb 2007
By Joanne Schofield (Newcastle upon Tyne, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Honour Thy Father (Paperback)
This is a book about 4 sisters; Agatha, Milly, Ellen and Esther. They have lived in their crumbling farmhouse all their lives, trapped and terrified by their long deceased father. As the story unfolds we learn of happier times in their youth, and more unhappy times as they grow older.

Glaister has a wonderful knack of creating such intricate, realistic characters and I really think this is what makes her books such a success. As Agatha and Milly grow old and the house starts to crumble along with them, the descriptions of decay relating to both the characters and their surroundings are both utterly fascinating and horrifying.

This is a relatively short book which I read in one day - but this is due to the author's skill as I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended, along with Glaister's other work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 20 Nov 2009
By Alison "Pixel Allie" (Derbyshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Honour Thy Father (Paperback)
This is quite a short book but it doesn't feel any the less because of it. I really enjoyed it and would put it amongst the best books I've read this year.

The story is about 4 elderly sisters who still live together in their family home. The time period covers a 24 hour period in the present day, but interspersed with flash-backs to memories of their childhoods. Right from the start there is a feeling of unease. Something is not right... I certainly don't want to spoil the story, but as the childhood memories progress and the events in the 24 hour present day progress, things are slowly unravelled and while I guessed some of things that were revealed there were plenty of surprises too. Glaister is highly skilled at giving this sense of unease and dread while slowing revealing why you are feeling that way.

One tip: My copy is a slighly different cover than this version, but don't read any reviews or summaries on the back cover. One on my copy gives away part of the story. Luckily I didn't read it till afterwards.

I've already ordered another highly rated book by the same author, "As Far as You Can Go", because I enjoyed reading this book so much.
