5.0 out of 5 stars Mallory is back, 31 Aug 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Crime School (Hardcover)
After the good yet slightly disappointing "Shell game", Carol O'connell is back in true form. With plenty of glimpses into Mallory's childhood on the streets as well as a gripping mystery, this book delivers what readers of the Mallory series have come to expect. I still think that O'connell's best book is the only one not featuring Mallory (Judas child), but this is another fine read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Are We Really Supposed To Believe, 18 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Crime School (Paperback)
That there is such a character as Kathy Mallory? Carol O'Connell has consistently depicted her as a machine while contrasting the flawed human warmth of Riker. It's a wholly unrealistic vision of humanity, in fact there is not one character in the book that does not fall into stereotype (the hard bitten cop with the heart of gold or the intellectual unable to love). Add to that, the plot is thin to say the least and you've got a poor piece of crime writing. Characters have to change and evolve through a series and Carol O'Connell has not achieved it. If you want a decent and well written crime book then go and read Ian Rankin or Lawrence Block.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Mallory story, 21 Sep 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Crime School (Hardcover)
Mallory and Riker are a fascinating police partnership, despite a deep bond they still can't trust each other. As well as an excellent murder/dtective story with the usual twist at the end, we learn a bi more about Mallory's early life.
