This is one of the best of Juliana Garnetts books, set in 1327 when the English and the Scots are still fighting each other. It is the story of Robert Campbell and Judith Lindsay. Judith is an English widow still living in Scotland unwanted by her inlaws and her own family, looking after Mairi a young heiress together they are kidnapped by the Campbells and taking across Scotland to the keep belonging to Angus Campbell the Laird. Robert is Laird in his own right and after his brothers are killed try's to make Judith's life a bit easier in her captivity, but Angus takes out his sorrow on her and suddenly her life is in danger. The story of how Robert tries to keep her safe against the backdrop of war against England and also of keeping both of them out of the clutches of the Earl of Argyll is both exciting and touching. Both Robert and Judith are warm characters, and Ms Garnett makes you want to hope that their love story ends happily, their are some true historical scenes but not much, also some Scots dialect but again not too much to distract from the story. The main story revolves around Robert and Judith, The author also makes you believe that this is how people must have lived all those years ago, the hardships of everyone but most especially the women saying goodbye to their men never knowing if they would see them ever again. All in all a lovely warm romance.

Really nicely written. It is a pity that Ms Garnett stopped writing historical romance.
The Baron and the Laird have a bit the same plot (kidnapping, beautiful courageous heroine, tempting kidnappers, a sizzling love story and of course lots of action) All in a quite accurate historical context.
As these books are not edited anymore I bought a used one. But for me new or old doesn't make a difference if the story is captivating. And it was the case.
