5.0 out of 5 stars Second in the Four Horsemen series, 28 Jul 2007
By Helen Hancox "Auntie Helen" (Essex, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
"Unforgiven," if you can find it, is an excellent read as so often with Mary Balogh's books. It's the second in the Four Horsemen series ("Indiscreet" is the first and "Irresistible" the third, the last book dealing with the romances of two of the horsemen). Some of the events in this story are referred to in "Indiscreet" but it's probably better to read that book first as "Unforgiven" summarises some of the events of "Indiscreet" which might spoil that story for some.

"Unforgiven" explores what happens when two people who hate each other because of wrongs and misunderstandings when they were teenagers but have to get married. The first half of the book deals with the return of Kenneth Woodfall, Earl of Haverford, to his home Dunbarton in Cornwall. He arrives just after the betrothal is announced between Moira Hayes, his old playmate and first love, and a distant cousin of hers, the "pompous ass" Sir Edwin Baillie. Sir Edwin seems to be modelled very much on Mr Collins in Pride and Prejudice and is a prosy bore, someone Moira thinks she can barely tolerate in marriage - however she has almost no choice as he is the heir to her and her mother's home and they have no other resources.

However Kenneth's return causes Moira not inconsiderable heartache. It's pretty clear to the reader that both Moira and Kenneth still have strong feelings for each other and these strong passions turn more to hate than love. We slowly learn what it is that each of them holds against each other in their past and the misunderstandings between them seem unlikely to be resolved because they appear unable to communicate.

The turning point of the novel, when Moira sets out to walk home in a blizzard and has to be rescued by Kenneth, is a little problematic. Suffice it to say that the method Moira and Kenneth use for keeping warm in the snowstorm isn't the obvious one to spring to mind between people who hate each other and it was pretty difficult to believe in this as part as the novel. However it was necessary for the rest of the plot and if you can suspend disbelief for those few pages the rest is an excellent read, if not perhaps quite to the standard of some of her other novels.

A marriage of convenience, contracted between two people who hate each other, is bound to be troublesome. Mary Balogh, with her usual skill, shows husband and wife learning to understand each other and themselves better and both trying, in their own individual and often fallible ways, to make something of their marriage. The other Horsemen have a role in bringing them together but the story mainly concentrates on Moira and Kenneth and the problems that their own manners (Moira being stubborn and sometimes recalcitrant, Kenneth being a little domineering and seeming cold) cause them. It's another great read, as Mary Balogh books so often are, and one worth seeking as it's been out of print for some time.
