5.0 out of 5 stars A book with style, and more than a crime novel, 29 Oct 2000
This review is from: Undue Influence (Paperback)
The duvet is a crime story, complex but not baffling, intelligent and as dependent on chance as on the darker elements of the human mind. The immediacy of the style allows for humour, narration and characterisation, but under the conversational present tense and the duvet of a whodunnit lurks a much deeper social commentary. If Martini were Balzac, he would have given us a two hundred page introduction on the social mores which make the rest possible - being Martini, he is content to insert a short paragraph here and there, as on Danny's latch-key lifestyle and its origins in the American way of life. This is a compelling read, and the only quibble must be with the ending - why must American crime writers involve their central characters so directly in the plot? As always, though, Martini is at his very best in the courtroom, where the jousting and the sniping are beautifully rendered - even if they are, as he says here and elsewhere, as part of the same social commentary - no substitute for justice. A novel to recommend unreservedly.
