Marsh departs from her usual format of a straightforward muder mystery to give us more of a creepy thriller. Unfortunately in so doing we lose much of the joy of her better works. As usual she writes with finesse and humour, and her characterisations are as ever extremely skillful - much more so than Christie's. But the plot is unfocussed and silly, and is based on ill-informed and prejudiced ideas about the properties of certain drugs which are irritating to the modern reader. A tiresome and unsatisfying read.
