In the heat of battle or plain intrigue - the reader sweats!, 17 Dec 2000

Success to the BraveFor the regular follower of Richard Bolitho, the main character in the story, it is yet another rivetting read. Don't be put off if you have not previously read one of this series, as you will enjoy it just as much. No doubt wishing to start the saga from the beginning with Bolitho a pre-teen midshipman. All the expected ingredients are included, such as the graphic, bitter experience of battle conditions in the navy of the early 19th century. In this story there is a savage, against all odds, close quarter engagement putting all the main characters in mortal danger. The build up of characters and their sudden demise, etches the horrors of war into the reader's mind. With his hard earned promotion to Vice Admiral, Bolitho is given a political mission which requires a man of action as well as astute political sense. Bolitho displays these qualities, but as always his black and white, right or wrong attitude to situations placing his country in danger, can never be over-ruled. The personal anguishes of the man, whose fear is only the loss of honour and trust, are displayed in this story. Again, his sacrifice to duty has made him leave a wife bearing his child - a situation he has reasons to be fearful of and which could cloud his judgement in situations he finds himself. A highlight of this story, if you have read all of the series so far, will be the re-appearance of a character from one of the earliest books - one which I had always wondered what had become of him. With the Richard Bolitho series of books you are absorbed with the well being of the characters and affected by the perceived realism of the dangers they are placed in. Due to this you tend not to think of it as a novel and therefore perhaps do not give as much credit to it's author, Alexander Kent, as one should. Once into this series you need to move on to the next book to check on the well being of the characters you begin to be concerned about - knowing the author does not shirk in 'killing' off any character to give the sense of realism. If you have no worries in life - find some in this series. This story is one of the top stories of the series and highly recommended!
